I think I was offered this book to review because no homeopath has ever managed to remove my own symptoms of menopause, that appeared14 years ago!! This book starts with a very short Foreword explaining why the author chose to write a book on Menopause because there are so many around! Next comes the usual preamble of medical definitions plus possible factors that determine the age at which menopause begins. I discount the one that  left handed woman start menopause earlier, as I personally know cases where this didn’t follow.

Next is a chapter on the physiology of menopause which focuses on the different hormones (FSH, LH) and how they work at all the menopause stages. This is followed by short chapters on the sociology and repercussions of menopause. I find the percentages particularly interesting, because according to the French Association for the Study of Menopause, only 67% woman experience hot flushes and as many as 38.5% get depression. Since another study reported different results, I wonder how much depends on the country women live in.

The second section addresses ‘Functional Disturbances’ and includes a very detailed description of menopausal symptoms of  the major remedies, as well as those of lesser known remedies and new remedies (from Julian) . All remedies come with useful posology suggestions, in the usual low potencies which are given in France.

I found this section very useful when having to make difficult differentiations for the best remedy – and haven’t we all been there. The author treats Hot Flushes and Sweating separately which I found interesting. Organotherapy, Phytotherapy and Aromatherapy suggestions are also discussed for each ‘Functional Disturbance’, with posology for each remedy suggested. Physical symptoms and Mental symptoms are included in this section and Weight Fluctuations.

The third section, “The Major Complications of Menopause” features Oseoporosis, Arterial Sclerosis and Cardiovascular Risk, Cancer and HRT. It follows the same excellent clear format as above: discussion, detailed description of the homeopathic remedies pertaining to the problem. Also included are Phyto and Gemmo therapies together with the use of Trace Elements with posology or prescribing tips for everything suggested. The discussion of HRT is very comprehensive with contraindications and precautions from 1998, which of course may well be out of date now! There is also a discussion about whether there is such a thing as homeopathic hormonal treatment, from the work of Dr. Plazy in 1952.

In the conclusion the author states that this book is a result of her own research in response to her patients’ needs and also to those who do not wish to use, or want to stop using HRT.

The rest of the book is taken up with a comprehensive Bibliography, remedy index, general index and a page detailing suppliers of remedies in the UK USA, Austria, Luxemburg and France.

The book itself is in a hard-back format with lovely illustrations and tables. The paper is very good quality with a good large clear print which is easy on the eyes.

I thought it would be yet another one of those books on this subject which would give me no new insights. However I have been very pleasantly surprised and for me, at least, it will save hours of research pouring over repertories and material medica. That’s because of the detail the author has given us of each remedy pertaining to the menopausal symptoms. All the modalities and concomitants are there to check on with our patients.  I love the way she writes about the remedies – it is all facts and easily absorbed. I will pour over the lesser and new remedies in the hope that I may find one to stop my own hot flushes – after 14 years!!

There are also three ‘special products’ mentioned which appear to be complexes but have a name, so I presume the suppliers she mentions in back of the book will know about them. I have tried everything else……..!

I would definitely recommend this book for all homeopaths dealing with this problem in women. Female homeopaths of a certain age may wish to buy this book for themselves, and for male homeopaths it will be an eye opener.
