It is with great enthusiasm that I present this Repertory
for your consideration. It is very substantial at nearly 2,000 pages,
printed on Bible paper, making it lighter and not as thick as one
would expect. This repertory is very complete and I rarely need
to consult another one when doing a case.
It is modern--the copyright date being 1996--and therefore includes
all our modern diseases including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Agoraphobia,
AIDS and other conditions you wouldn't expect to find in Kent's
Repertory; plus, it has many of the newer remedies like Chocolate
and Hydrogen, and even includes the Bach Flower remedies.
Aside from having many more homeopathic
remedies and ailments than Kent's Repertory, the great advantage
of this book is that it is the only modern repertory
formatted in alphabetical order. I can remember taking my introductory
course in homeopathy, the first sessions of which were spent entirely
on learning--not homeopathy--but Kent's Repertory, and how to figure
it out; because truly, it is not self-explanatory; and oddly enough,
all subsequent modern repertories except for Murphy's have replicated
this arcane construct, perpetuating this burdensome feature of our
most essential reference tool.
Murphy's Repertory is a veritable breath of fresh air! He has not
only put the entire repertory in alphabetical order, he has also
added new chapters so that things can be found where one would expect
to find them. For instance, he created a much-needed "Food"
chapter so that those essential food and drink cravings can easily
be found. He created a "Pregnancy" chapter, so that if
your patient has morning sickness, it can easily be found by going
alphabetically to "Pregnancy" and then alphabetically
to "M" for "Morning sickness" within the chapter.
There are 70 chapters in Murphy's Repertory to Kent's 39.
Here's an interesting chapter: "Environment"; scroll
down to "c" for "Cloudy weather agg."; or "m"
for "Moon, full moon agg." How about a much needed "Emergency"
chapter; scroll down to "b" for "Bites of cats"-acet-ac.,
Hyper.(3), lach.(2), Led.(3)".
Then there's the "Toxicity" chapter. Scroll down to "c"
for "Chemotherapy, treatment, for side effects of-ars., Cadm-s.(3),
chin., ip.(2), nux v."
Other newly added chapters include: Headaches, Delusions, Glands,
Joints, Hips, Hands, Feet, Elbows, Diseases, Constitutions, and
Children.
You can see that an effort has seriously been made here to truly
make the Repertory user-friendly.
In fact, if Robin Murphy had done nothing else for homeopathy in
his life but reformat the Repertory with all the additions, including
new rubrics, he'd deserve a life-time achievement award for this
alone.
