Anthrax is a serious illness caused by a bacterium known as bacillus anthracis, which forms spores and due to spore formation it becomes difficult to control it because spores can exist for decades in a dormant state until they find a favorable environment to grow rapidly.

Anthrax can appear in three main forms:

1. Cutaneous form (skin)
2. Gastrointestinal
3. Inhalation ( lungs)

Cause of anthrax

The causative agent of anthrax is a bacterium known as bacillus anthracis. Anthrax organism forms spores and remains in dormant state which is hard to destroy. Because of this reason this illness is known to be dangerous.

Symptoms of anthrax

Cutaneous symptoms – the first symptom is a small sore that develops in to a skin ulcer with a black area in the center.  The sore, blister and ulcer do not hurt.

Gastrointestinal symptoms – nausea, anorexia or loss of appetite, loose stools with blood, fever

Followed by

Intense pain in stomach

Symptoms related to inhalation – sore throat, muscle ache, mild fever, cough, discomfort in the chest, easily fatigue, and tiredness.

Diagnosis of anthrax

Anthrax can be diagnosed through cultures of the blood, skin lesions, or sputum of an exposed person. If bacterium anthracis is isolated, it means diagnosis is conformed.  Chest X-ray may also demonstrate characteristic changes in and between lungs.  In addition to it, specific antibodies may be detected in the blood.

Treatment of anthrax – prognosis is good if cases are treated in early stages, anthrax is generally treated with antibiotics medicines.
