Asthenopia is a common term for eye strain, or discomfort with prolonged use. It is one of the most common complaints from patients, particularly school children. Asthenopia is not damaging to the eyes, it is only uncomfortable. A complete occur examination should be performed to check for possible ocular disease. If no disease is present, visual acuity is normal, and the patient is emmetropic or nearly so.
