Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancers in males and major cause which is responsible for deaths due to cancer in United States. Bladder cancer is more common in men than women.

Causes and risk factors for bladder cancer

For both mens and women, the number one cause of bladder cancer is cigarette smoking (one of the major causes of bladder cancer in mens). The carcinogens inhaled in smoke can enter the blood stream and reach the urine.

Exposure to these chemicals in the environment can also increase the risk of bladder cancer. Genetic factors determine how well the body can prevent these chemicals from damaging genes. Ultimately, it is a genetic change that turns healthy cells into cancerous cells. Other risk factors include a family history of the disease, recurrent bladder infections, diet, and increasing age.

Sign and symptoms of bladder cancer

One of the most common signs of bladder cancer is blood in the urine or haematuria. Haematuria is not the only warning sign, however. Depending on its location within the bladder, the tumor may interfere with the normal functioning of the bladder, which could manifest as irritative voiding symptoms. These symptoms include urinary urgency and urinary frequency.

Kidney stones can also cause these symptoms as they pass through the last part of the ureters.

Irritative voiding symptoms such as urgency and frequency are also the most common symptoms of an overactive bladder.

If the tumor is located near the urethral orifice (the opening of the ureter into the bladder), it may block the flow of urine from the kidneys and cause an obstruction.

Obstruction may often lead to back pain, nausea, and vomiting, especially if it occurs quickly.

More gradual obstruction is often asymptomatic. Very rarely, both urethral orifices may become obstructed, leading to low output and kidney failure.

If the cancer has spread to an output of the bladder, then it could cause swelling of the legs or bone pain. If the tumor is very large, it could be felt as a mass in the lower abdomen.

Diagnosis of bladder cancer

If bladder cancer is suspected, a biopsy, or small sample of bladder tissue, is removed. The tissue is examined to confirm the diagnosis. If the cells are cancerous, further tests may be done to determine if the cancer has invaded the muscular bladder wall or spread to other part of the body.
