Some patients with or without normal ventricular function may experience symptoms with ventricular pacing. These include exercise intolerance, dyspnea, cough, chest discomfort, abdominal distension, nausea, fatigue and tiredness, dizziness, syncope or presyncope, and hypotension. Some patients with or without normal ventricular function may experience symptoms with ventricular pacing. These include exercise intolerance, dyspnea, cough, chest discomfort, abdominal distension, nausea, fatigue and tiredness, dizziness, syncope or presyncope, and hypotension.

This constellation of symptoms id referred to as “pacemaker syndrome” and is a result of loss of AV synchrony.

The diagnosis of pacemaker syndrome should always be considered when persistent or new symptoms suggestive of low cardiac output or heart failure occur after satisfactory of low cardiac output or heart failure occur after satisfactory implantation of a permanent ventricular pacemaker.

Pacemaker syndrome causes

Pacemaker syndrome is commonly caused by retrograde ventriculoatrial conduction, which causes atrial contraction against closed mitral and tricuspid valves. Pacemaker syndrome may also occur during an exercise-induced atrial arrhythmia due to loss of AV synchrony when a device with an automatic mode-switching feature converts to VV1 pacing.

Pacemaker syndrome symptoms

Symptoms of pacemaker syndrome include dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations, and fatigue. More serious symptoms, such as hypotension, syncope, and heart failure, can be observed in a small number of patients.

Laboratory studies or pacemaker syndrome diagnosis

No lab studies are indicated, the best method of diagnosis is to correlate patients’ symptoms with their cardiac rhythms. This may include use of holter moniter or event recorder. Pacemaker malfunction, excessive ventricular pacing should be ruled out, should also look for evidence of AV dissociation or VA conduction.

Homeopathic treatment for pacemaker syndrome

Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine. The selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. This is the only way through which a state of complete health can be regained by removing all the sign and symptoms from which the patient is suffering. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat pacemaker syndrome but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility. As far as therapeutic medication is concerned, several remedies are available to treat pacemaker syndrome that can be selected on the basis of cause, sensations and modalities of the complaints.  For individualized remedy selection and treatment, the patient should consult a qualified homeopathic doctor in person. There are following remedies which are helpful in the treatment of pacemaker syndrome:

Aconite, Carbo Veg, Phosphorous, Sepia, Naja, Gelsemium, Agaricus, Phosphoric Acid, Bryonia, Camphor, Digitalis, Cactus, Calcaria Carb, Kalmia, and many other medicines.
