Salivary gland cancer is an uncommon type of cancer that starts in the tissue of one of the salivary glands. There are a number of salivary glands inside the mouth.
Causes of salivary gland cancer
Salivary gland cancer is a rare cancer. Exact cause of salivary gland cancer is unknown but several risk factors can increase the risk of developing salivary gland cancer:
- Increasing age
- Exposure to radiation
- Tobacco smoking
- Previous skin cancer
- Family history of cancer
- Human Papilloma virus
Clinical presentation of salivary gland cancer
Symptoms are nonspecific and generally include halitosis, Dysphagia, exophthalmos, or a unilateral, firm, painless, swelling of the upper neck (mandibular, and sublingual, base of the ear (parotid), upper lip or maxilla (zygomatic), or mucous membrane of lip or tongue (accessory salivary tissue). Major differential diagnoses are mucoceles, abscesses, salivary gland infraction, sialadenitis, lymphoma, or reactive, or reactive or metastatic lymphadenopathy.
Diagnostic techniques and workup
Fine needle aspiration cytology of masses in these locations should help differentiate noncancerous disease from cancer. Regional radiographs will usually be normal but may reveal periosteal reaction on adjacent bones or displacement of surrounding structure. CT imaging may be helpful in determining extent of disease and infilteration into surrounding structures. Needle core or wedge biopsies will usually be necessary to make a definitive diagnosis.
Differential diagnosis
- Infectious parotitis
- Sialoadenitis
- Autoimmune parotitis
- Metastasis
- Lymphoma
- Benign neoplasms
- Malignant neoplasms
