Written by Dr. Manisha Bhatia

Vocal polyps are fluid filled sacs that can form on the lining of the vocal cords. Vocal nodules are small, callous growths. Papilloma is a wart like growth that can occur in the vocal cord area. Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine.

Vocal polyps

Vocal polyps are fluid filled sacs that can form on the lining of the vocal cords. Usually only side of the vocal cords has a polyp. It can be caused initially by straining the voice on just one occasion, such as singing during a long, loud concert.

If the person continues to overuse his or her voice, the strained cord is further irritated and the polyp will grow. A child with a polyp may sound breathy or hoarse and may feel like clearing his throat because it feels like something is “down there. “ unfortunately, clearing the throat can make the problem worse, because it irritates the polyp.

Vocal nodule

Vocal nodules are small, callous growths that can start on one side of the vocal cords. As the irritated side bangs against the other vocal cord when vibrating, its hardness irritates the other side of the vocal cords, so it is fairly common to see two vocal nodules, one on each side, in a person with a long term hoarseness problem.

Nodules are typically caused by a long term source of irritation, such as yelling, or speaking loudly too often; chronic coughing; or singing or speaking with stress or strain. Nodules are more common in boys and more common than vocal polyps.

Papilloma

Is a wart like growth that can occur in the vocal cord area. The majority of l cases occur in children under the age of 6. When speaking, the child may sound as though she has vocal polyps or vocal nodules. The Papilloma can eventually block the airway, causing difficulty breathing.

Vocal cord paralysis

Vocal cord paralysis may be characterized by as either a superior laryngeal nerve deficit, recurrent laryngeal nerve deficit, or total vagus nerve deficit. Imaging should address the entire course of the vagus nerve and the recurrent laryngeal nerve when assessing vocal cord paralysis.
