Thyroidinum as a Deeper Acting Remedy

Case Report

Chief Complaint – Weakness

45 year old woman, obese.  TSH – 7.65 Iu , Is On 100 Mg Eltroxin for past 5 yrs , without much change.  Weakness – exhaustion, all over the Body  , Cant sit or stand – says “I feel as if I will drop down , excessive weakness”

Feels hungry with weakness, especially wants to have BARFI and MITHAI during weakness. Further she describes – her old skin symptoms:  Says it’s a violent itching  all over the body. No Spots.

Itching from head to foot ( urticaria)

On observation – soft goitre

While talking, she suddenly laughs

Wants to lie down , Not be talking , just without anything to do , kind of laziness within. Says she feels very comfortable when lies on abdomen.

At this point- i asked her about her state of mind and there was no response from her. Her husband says she is very possessive by nature, describes her as someone who is very suspicious.  He says she has a strong persecution complex, feels “why me?”, “why am I suffering”.

She gets very irritable before menses.Dreams – Doesn’t remember

I am Fast Paced person that way

But due to My Illness , now I feel very exhausted

Generals

• can’t tolerate cold
• appetite – more especially during weakness – wants to have mithai especially during weakness
• sleepiness constantly

She  laughs constantly  – in a weird way in between discussions.

Analysis

The peculiar symptom in this case – craving for sweets – during weakness . When I started analyzing this in repertory I didn’t find this rubric in Kent but finally found this in Phatak.

I found a single remedy – Thyroidinum  after which I analysed the entire case – and was quite surprised to find many symptoms which pointed towards – Thyroidinum

RX – Thyroidinum 200 once a month , every month  for 6 months

Follow up after 6 months:

eltroxin reduced by 50 %

tsh 5.8 iu

weakness is less by 25 %

no dreams

state of mind

more relaxed compared to before

cravings – sweets ++

We plan to taper down the allopathic medicines

Follow up after 1 year

eltroxin stopped

tsh 5.1 iu

weakness is less by 75%

dreams – frightful

state of mind

more relaxed compared to before

cravings – absent

perspiration scanty

feels better lying on abdomen

Follow up after 3 years on the remedy:

tsh – 2.9 iu

weakness >>stopped

allopathic medicines have been totally reduced

no dreams

An interesting case by Dr S. C. Ghosh will help reveal the action of  Thyroidinum.  A baby aged 10 days, developed loss of voice without any difficulty in swallowing. On examination, no cough or catarrhal symptoms or fever were detected. Respiration was normal, stools were somewhat diarrhoeic, 6 – 8 times a day. As it was the rainy season rhus tox. was tried for 4 days without any effect. Then a few doses of phosphorus 30th were administered for three days without any improvement. Considering that the condition might be paretic or under development of the vocal cords due to defective growth I prescribed Thyroidinum 30, 3 doses, one dose every 12 hours.  It had immediate effect from the 1st dose and voice improved, the diarrhea was controlled and with a little change in the diet the child improved a great deal physically.

Another example would be of help to understand the action of Thyroidinum in potency in defective nervous development. It was a case of a newly married girl aged 18 years who was perfectly normal before marriage. Her husband came to me for consultation regarding his wife, who was having convulsions towards the end of coition. She was of normal intelligence and proper physical development. It was her defective functional response to stimuli that I thought to be responsible for this condition. A dose of thyroidinum 200 was enough to strengthen her nervous system and make her competent to enjoy the delight of org-asm.

I think Thyroidinum is efficacious in serious cases where the life of the child is at stake. Thyroid is very efficacious also in the various obscure troubles of the new born babies when there is reason to think that both the growths of the organs and the general vital force are not keeping pace with the general growth of the body.

Studying this remedy , gives us another alternative to carbo veg in difficult cases. The difference can be: Thyroidinum is chilly, carbo veg needs fanning. Nausea , vomiting , uncontrollable diarhoea or vomiting , with odema and fetidness , offensiveness  are few keynotes in this condition.  A typical thyroidinum constitutional physical state would be either thin, lean or obese, mostly chilly with prominent eyes, swelling in feet, with lean or obese constitution.
