      Arbor vitae. HAHNEMANN. Coniferae.

Mind

      Cannot think, talks slowly, as if hunting for words; uses wrong words.

Fixed ideas : as if a strange person was at his side; as if soul and body were separated; as if made of glass; as if a living animal were in abdomen.

Insane women will not be touched or approached.

Hurried, with ill humor; talks hastily.

Disinclined to talk, worse on awaking mornings.

Feels as if she cannot exist any longer; quiet; shunning every- body.

Extremely scrupulous about least thing.

Dissatisfied, quarrelsome; overexcited, angry at trifles.

Music causes weeping, and trembling of feet.

Sensorium

      Vertigo: with eyes shut, ceases on opening them; when rising from sitting; on stooping; looking upward or sideways.

Inner Head

      Tearing in forehead, temples and occiput; worse at night. Pain in left frontal eminence as from a nail.

Pressing in vertex, as from a nail; worse afternoon and from to 4 A.M.; better in motion and after sweat.

Boring through temples.

Headache worse from sexual excesses; overheating; better from exercise in open air, looking upward and turning the head backward.

Headache worse from tea.

Outer Head

      Scalp sensitive to touch or pressure of pillow; better if rubbed : violent burning, tearing, stitching pains, worse in warm bed.

Eruption moist, corroding on occiput and temples; worse from touch, better from rubbing.

White, scaly dandruff; hair dry and falling out.

Sweat smelling like honey, mostly on uncovered parts.

Wants head and face warmly wrapped.

Eyes

      Flames of light, mostly yellow; looking into light of day, sees spots like bubbles of water moving.

Amblyopia; blurred sight better from rubbing; aching back into the head.

Acts prominently on the sclerotica; useful in episcleritis, sclero-choroiditis anterior, and commencing scleral staphyloma.

Iritis, with condylomata on the iris; sharp sticking in the eye with much heat above and around the eye.

Better when eyes are warmly covered; if uncovered, feels as if a cold stream of air was blowing out through them; but sometimes a dull aching in the eye is relieved in the open air.

Granular lids, when granules are large, wart-like.

Chronic conjunctivitis, worse whenever his night’s rest is disturbed.

Dry, bran-like tinea ciliaris; lashes imperfect and irregular. Inflammatory softening of inner surface of lids.

Excellent for tarsal tumors.

Ears

      Inner ear feels swollen, with increased hardness of hearing.

Noise in ear as from boiling water.

Stitches from neck into ear.

Watery, purulent, otorrhoea, smelling like putrid meat.

Nose

      Smell in nose as of fish-brine.

Coryza fluent out doors, dry in the room.

Blows out much thick, green mucus, mixed with blood and pus; later brown scabs form; nose sore; red eruption on the alae, often moist; the latter worse from excesses.

Painful scabs in nostrils.

Face

      Red and hot, netted with veins; circumscribed burning, red cheeks; bloated, dropsical, erysipelatous.

Skin hot and red, peels off when washed.

Eruption leaves livid spots.

Faceache, from left malar to ear, teeth, nose and head; painful spots burn like fire, and are sensitive to the sun; also, after checked eruption.

Boring in left malar bone, relieved by touch.

Skin of the face greasy.

Lower Face

      Lips pale, swollen, peeling off.

White flat ulcers on inside of lips and in corners of mouth.

Teeth

      Decay at roots (as in sycosis), the crown remaining sound; crumble, turn yellow, Toothache from tea; also when better from cold water and worse in warm room.

Gums swollen, inflamed, dark red in streaks; with white suppurating margins.

Tongue etc.

      Taste : sweet; of putrid eggs, morning; food seems not salt enough; of bread, as if dry and bitter.

Tongue swollen, worse right side.

Bites the tongue frequently.

Ranula bluish, surrounded by varicose veins; jelly-like or grey.

Mouth

      Aphthae; ulcers in the mouth.

Throat

      Feels raw, dry, as if from a plug, or as if constricted when swallowing.

Much mucus in throat, hawked up with difficulty.

Swallowing painful, especially of saliva.

Mucous tubercles in the fauces.

Desires Aversions

      Craving alternates with want of appetite.

Thirst, especially at night; longs for cold food and drink.

Eating and Drinking

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations: rancid, or acid; of air, while eating.

Vomiting of mucus, or greasy substances.

Stomach

      The fluid he drinks falls audibly into stomach.

Pit of stomach swollen; sensitive.

Indurations in the stomach.

Hypochondria

      Stitches in hypochondria, now right, then left.

Abdomen

      While sitting, stitching in abdomen, as from needles.

Upper part of abdomen drawn in.

Flatulence, as if an animal were crying in abdomen.

Abdomen big, puffed; protrudes here and there, as from the arm of a foetus; motions therein, as if it contained something alive (in old maids).

Ileus; spasmodic stricture, as if something alive was pushing out.

Soreness of the navel.

Painful swelling of inguinal glands.

Stool etc.

      Stool pale; yellow, watery, expelled forcibly, with much noisy flatus, with blood; oily or greasy; gurgling, like water from a bung-hole.

Diarrhoea : daily after breakfast; after vaccination; fat food; onions; or coffee.

Ineffectual urging, with erections.

Stool in hard balls; obstinate constipation, from inactivity or intussusception.

Hemorrhoids : during stool pains are so great she has to desist; burning violently while walking; anus fissured; sensitive to touch; often with warts.

Abrasions of the anus; oozing of fluid from the anus.

Urine

      Kidneys inflamed; feet swollen.

Stitches from rectum to bladder.

Bladder feels paralyzed; has no power to expel urine.

Frequent urging, with profuse flow, more toward and in the evening; with stitches in urethra.

Involuntary urination at night, or when coughing.

After urination, feels as if a drop were running down urethra.

Continued urging; passes a few drops of blood.

Wants to pass water, but feels as if a tape prevented.

Urine : too frequent and too copious; contains sugar, foams; dark red in the morning; deposits a brown mucus; with dark, cloudy sediment, in rheumatism.

Burning, smarting in urethra.

Male Sexual Organs

      Nightly painful erections, causing sleeplessness.

Round, unclean, elevated ulcers, surrounded with redness; moist, painful.

Chancres, with pains, as from a splinter sticking.

Gonorrhoea: scalding, when urinating; urethra swollen, urinal stream forked; discharge yellow, green, watery; often with warts; with red erosions on the glands.

Checked gonorrhoea, causing : articular rheumatism; prostatitis; sycosis; impotence.

Swelling of the prepuce.

Sycotic, moist excrescences on prepuce and glans.

Left testicle drawn up.

Aching in testes, as if contused, worse when walking.

Sweetish-smelling sweat on the scrotum.

Female Sexual Organs

      Embrace prevented by extreme sensitiveness of vagina.

Menses too short and too early; preceded by profuse sweat.

Erosions at the os uteri, like aphthae. Mucous leucorrhoea.

Cauliflower excrescences, bleeding easily and offensive.

Left ovary inflamed, worse at each menstrual nisus; distressing pain, burning when walking or riding; must lie down.

Pains in vulva and perineum; cramp when rising from a seat; erysipelas vulvae.

Condylomata, moist, suppurating, stinging and bleeding.

Erectile tumors, with burning.

Pregnancy

      Child moves so violently it awakens her, and causes cutting in bladder, with urging to urinate; pains in left sacro-iliac articulation, running into groin.

Abortion, at the third month.

Labor-pains weak and ceasing.

Larynx

      Sensation as of a skin in larynx.

Breathing

      Short-breathed : from mucus in the trachea; from fulness and constriction in hypochondria and upper abdomen.

Asthma worse at night with red face; coughing spells or sensations of adhesions of lungs.

Cough

      Evenings, after lying down, sputum is loose and easier when he turns from the left to the right side; only during the day, or in the morning after rising; as soon as he eats or drinks anything cold.

Sputa : green, taste like old cheese.

Lungs

      Spasm of lungs from drinking cold water.

Stitches in chest from drinking anything cold.

Heart Pulse

      Palpitation : periodical, in rest or motion; from ascending; anxious, when awaking, mornings; audible, with violent congestion to the chest.

Violent pulsation in evening.

Pulse, full accelerated, evening; slow and weak, morning.

Outer Chest

      Skin on clavicles blue.

Neck Back

      Cervical glands swollen.

Skin on neck brown, greasy.

Burning from small of back to between scapulae.

Pulsating in the back.

Spine curved, stands bent forward; pot-bellied.

Cramp-like pain in lumbar region after long standing; when attempting to walk, feels as if he would fall.

Upper Limbs

      Herpes on the elbow.

Finger tips : erysipelatous, when tingling; numb and cold, as if dead.

Lower Limbs

      Hip-joint feels relaxed, when walking, leg feels as if made of wood.

Hip aches, leg becomes elongated.

Tips of toes red and swollen.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
