IODUM

IODUM symptoms of the homeopathy remedy from Homeopathic Drug Pictures by M.L. Tyler. What are the symptoms of IODUM? Keynote indications and personality traits of IODUM…

      Iodine the element.

Introduction

A VERY useful drug when used on its unique indications, viz. Intolerance of heat : Inordinate hunger, with Emaciation: Emaciation with glandular enlargement: intense restlessness with apprehension.

The drug was proved by Hahnemann who (Chronic Diseases) speaks of it as a heroic medicine, even when employed in the highest potencies; but, he says, “its use requires all the discretion of a good homoeopathic physician, lest he should abuse this substance as allopathic physicians do. ”

He says the drug has rendered especial service in affections with the following symptoms: Dizziness in the morning: throbbing in the head : pain as from excoriation in eyes: buzzing in ears: hardness of hearing: coated tongue; mercurial ptyalism: bad taste as of soap: sour eructations, with a sense of burning: heartburn after eating heavy food: canine hunger: nausea; incarceration of flatulence: distension of abdomen: constipation: nightly micturition: delaying menses: cough: old morning cough: difficulty of breathing; external swelling of neck: weakness of arms, early morning in bed: going to sleep of fingers: curvature of bones: dryness of skin: night sweats.

He quotes also from the provings of other doctors; and then gives the schema of symptoms, in the usual order, from provings.

NASH sums up Iodum thus:

Always hungry; eats or wants to eat all the time, yet emaciates. Better while eating.

Hypertrophy of all the glands except mammary, which dwindle. While body withers, glands enlarge.

Mentally anxious; anguish; wants to move, do something; hurry, kill somebody, etc.

Warm blooded notwithstanding emaciation: wants a cool place to move, think, work in.

Pulsations all over, stomach, back, even arms, fingers and toes.

Especially suitable to the dark-haired, dark-eyed, dark-skinned.

Worse fasting: warm room. Better eating; moving; cold air. Hard goitre in dark-haired persons: tumour in breast. Heart squeezed: grasped.

Croup : child grasps larynx : face pale and cold.

Remarkable and unaccountable sense of weakness and loss of breath going upstairs. This relief from eating is not only of the sensation of hunger, but of his sufferings in general: he only feels well while eating. It makes no difference whether it is phthisis pulmonalis, mesenteric, or general, this symptom, well developed, rules out everything but Iodine in almost every case, and it has made many remarkable cures. “I have cured many cases of goitre with Iodine cm when indicated, giving a powder every night for four nights, after the moon fulled and was waning.”

FARRINGTON writes about Iodine: we abbreviate:–All the halogens may be remembered by this great characteristic: they act on larynx and bronchial tubes: on mucous membranes generally. They are decidedly irritating to mucous membranes, producing violent inflammation, rawness and excoriation, as anybody can testify who has once inhaled the fumes of Chlorine, Iodine, or Bromine. They all produce spasm of the glottis and this is most marked and characteristic in Chlorine. All tend to produce pseudo-membranous formations on mucous membranes.

Iodine causes absorption, especially of glandular structures, extending to other tissues, and involving finally even nervous structures. He is relieved while eating, yet emaciates despite the amount of food he eats. Sooner or later, nervous system becomes involved and he is afflicted with tremor. Every little annoyance causes trembling. Longs for open air, as if cold fresh air gave him more health.

Phthisis pulmonalis may call for Iodine. Indicated in young persons who grow too rapidly, are rather emaciated, with dry cough, excited by tickling all over the chest. Cannot bear a warm room. Expectoration tough and blood-streaked. Weakness in chest, especially going upstairs. The patient has a very good appetite and is relieved by eating.

Heart enlarged : palpitation after any manual labour. Heart sensation, as if squeezed by a firm hand. The patient can scarcely talk or breathe, so weak does he feel. In valvular disease, there is a feeling of vibration over heart, such as you get when stroking a purring cat. (Spigelia.)

Children cry for their dinner, feel better while eating, yet gain no flesh. Excessive mental irritability.

Iodine may be indicated in cancer of uterus, particularly with profuse haemorrhages. The leucorrhoea is characteristic, yellowish and very corrosive.

KENT stresses the peculiar anxiety of Iodine, mental and physical: anxiety with a thrill that necessitates change of position, and makes it impossible to keep still. If he tries to keep still he is tormented with impulses to violence: “and so he walks day and night!”–though exhausted with waking, and sweating profusely with slight exertion.

Hypertrophy, next: enlargement of glands; liver, spleen, ovaries, testes, lymphatic glands: of all the glands except the mammary glands: these dwindle; while all the other glands become enlarged, nodular, and hard. Enlargement especially of the lymphatic glands of abdomen and the mesenteric glands.

With Iodine, “while the body withers, the glands enlarge. The glands grow in proportion to the dwindling of the body and the emaciation of the limbs: as in marasmus. Muscles shrink: skin wrinkles, till a child looks like a little old person.”

Iodine is always hungry: is relieved while eating, and relieved while in motion. In spite of hunger and much eating, he still emaciates.
