A 32 year old woman with serious eyes and a forlorn look sat down in my office and started describing her problem. Her chief complaint was that she slept 12 to 14 hours a day. She saw faces when her eyes were closed and sometimes felt she was dreaming while awake.
There was a history of trauma from sexual abuse with its attendant fright and shame. This woman had not had a normal night’s sleep or a normal day in years. After seeing many doctors and undergoing countless tests, it was still a mystery. The problem had robbed her of much of her life and most of her savings.
She knew nothing of homeopathy, but was here in desperation, on the recommendation of a friend. I tried explaining the essentials, but I could see she was not interested and only wanted to solve the problem. I gave her a dropper bottle with Opium 30 and told her to take one dose and call me if anything changed.
Ten days later she called and said that after the first dose she slept normally for eight hours, without visions, and awoke alert for the first time in her adult life. That continued for a few days and then she had relapsed. I was delighted and told her to repeat the remedy after succussing the bottle.
“No”, she said. Rather surprised, I asked, “Why not?” “I have appointments with doctors for more tests. I want to get this diagnosed, before it’s cured”. I said “If you repeat the remedy, the problem will likely go away, and you won’t need a diagnosis”. She held firm. “Would you rather be diagnosed or cured?” I asked. “Diagnosed” she said.
It was as though she could easier live with the disease, than uncertainty. She wanted the name of the demon that had possessed her. Somehow, knowing the name would expel it more surely than the remedy. Perhaps also, the ailment had served some purpose for her. I never saw or heard from her again. Sometimes finding the simillimum is not enough. Homoeopathy is complex, but it pales before the human psyche.

wow alan, thanks for such a strange and chilling tale. Truly no mystery is greater to us than the soul. Hope prescribing opium does not cause you any troubles! Just because we can get Cann I and Op. and the nosodes from other countries I still wonder what would happen if the wrong folks start asking questions…
Curiously enough ian watson on his page has an excellent interview from conscious tv where he explains how he also came to see that prescribing and remedies where not the bottom of the well. Loved it. Hopefully someone here will interview him.
