Science and Homeopathy

The issue of ‘how scientific is homeopathy?’ keeps coming up again and again. The misunderstandings regarding the scientific nature of homeopathy are as rampant within the homeopathic community as they are outside it. The lack of a proper medical education for most homeopaths also contributes to the chaos within. Often I have seen that when questions are put up to homeopaths regarding various issues like provings, vital force, miasms, potentization etc., they are not able to give answers that would convince a skeptic and give food for thought. The stand that many homeopaths take – ‘This is how we are! You like it, you stay otherwise you go’ – is not in the best interest of homeopathy.

Time has come when we need to find answers to many intriguing puzzles in homeopathy. Time has come to generate clinical statistics on larger scale so that the question of clinical efficacy is answered for good and the focus shifts on physical research. We do not need to prove ourselves to anybody but if we really want homeopathy to rule the roost, we will need to give answers that people can comprehend easily. Each one of us believes that homeopathy has an effect. It is a universal law that where there is an effect, there is a cause. We need to find the cause behind the effects of homeopathy.

The current understanding of physics, chemistry and biology are not sufficient to explain the ’cause’ and ‘effect’ of homeopathy. Still, we can not run away from science as if it’s an alien. I am quite sure that in a few more years, we will have reasonable answers to most questions that remain unanswered in homeopathy.

It is not enough to present cured cases as proof of homeopathy. The skeptics easily wave most of them off as placebo effect. Let me give an example. It’s summer time here in India and cases of epistaxis come to the clinics in relatively large numbers during this period. Last year, a 7 year old boy came to me for this problem. He was getting an attack of epistaxis nearly every alternate day since past 3 years! After taking the full case, I gave him a dose of Calc-carb 200c. For four months after that there was no epistaxis. Next summer there was a mild relapse, which was again helped by Calc-carb. Then a couple of weeks back, I had another case from Nepal. This boy, aged 18, was also having this problem since last 2/3 years. Since past one year the problem was very much increased. When the patient came to me, he was having 4 to 5 attacks of epistaxis daily! There was bleeding from nose even during sleep. With the help of this symptom and his other generalities, I gave him Merc sol 30C. The boy has not had a single episode of epistaxis since then!

Such dramatic cures can not be attributed to placebo but unless and until we have a large statistical repertoire of such cases, it would prove difficult to defend each isolated cure. Hpathy.com and this journal, Homeopathy for Everyone, are just such opportunities for the homeopathic community to build such a repertoire. Let us join hands, create a global movement and spread the joy of homeopathy to everyone in this world.

Yours sincerely,
