How Good Are Your Case Records?

- Dr. Manish Bhatia

Recently, I was wondering about how to celebrate my clinic's anniversary. I thought about holding a free medical camp in some village or organizing a seminar for patients. But nothing seemed to click. They all were one-day events and were not supposed to make any significant difference in my clinical life in any way.

Then I started pondering over the shortcomings in my practice, issues that keep bugging me. One is my hand-writing. Sometimes during the second or third consultation, I find it difficult to decipher words written during the first consultation! The 'e', the 'i', the 't', the 'j' - they all look pretty much same after a few weeks. Guess, I can't do much about that, so I moved on to other issues.

The next thing that bugs me is the lack of ability to retrieve statistical summaries. If I saw a hundred cases of asthma last year, with all those paper cases, I cannot track how many have been cured, how many have left the treatment, what remedies and potencies have been used, difference between successful cases and failures. Think about it - how exciting it would be to have such data in your hands. What a great learning experience it would become and how much it will add to our cumulative knowledge. If we are able to do this, every clinic will become a research center in itself.

I think such data can have repercussions beyond our individual practices. It will not just help us improve ourselves, but 'quantified' results can be easily audited and approved by third parties. Untill homeopathy gets proved 'physically', our clinical success is all we have to keep homeopathy alive. So we should go all out to document the results that we get. Our documented success is what will turn the tide in favor of homeopathy.

So this year, I have decided to gift my practice a complete electronic practice management software - something that will take care of records right from patient registration, to keeping track of who gets what and what are the results in individual cases and what are the results in specific groups (be it age, gender, or name of disease, or cases with specific remedies). If you have any recommendations for the right tool, you can write to me at editor@hpathy.com. I will share with you my experiences after a few months.

Now coming to this issue, we have Nancy Herrick in our hot-seat. George Vithoulkas has answered more questions from our readers and Rudi Verspoor continues his series on Hahnemann's occasional writings. Dr. S.C. Kursija gives a list of homeopathic remedies for cancer, Alan Schmukler continues with his Tips & Secrets and Ajit Kulkarni shares with us the beauty of silence. There are details about 'Homeopathy Worked for Me' campaign from UK and another article on the situation of homeopathy in UK by Carol Boyce, some cases and a lecture on the role of vital force in disease.

Also in this issue, Bruce Barwell shares some homeopathic hints from orthodox medicine. Sadly, Bruce died unexpectedly a few days ago before we could publish this article. We at Hpathy, pay our tribute to this wonderful homeopathic soul.

There is much more to explore in this issue. Read, enjoy and do send us your feedback at editor@hpathy.com

Yours in Homeopathy,

Dr. Manish Bhatia
