Homeopathy and Mental Health Care

Lately we’ve heard a chant for evidence based medicine More often than not it’s a code word for attacking holistic therapies and promoting pharmaceuticals. However, for those in the medical community who sincerely want to see the light, this book offers more than enough. Its twenty chapters are rich with documentation of homeopathy’s success in mental health problems. For any homeopath, this is a modern anthology of some of the best ideas in homeopathy.

It begins with Dr. Manish Bhatia who sets the groundwork by showing how conventional approaches have not only failed, but made matters worse. He introduces homeopathy as a safe, effective, economical option and offers scores of studies showing positive effects for homeopathy in ailments ranging from depression and ADHD to drug abuse. He makes the case for integrating the best of both systems.

Dr. Iris R. Bell and Mary Koithan PhD show how homeopathic treatment often transforms people, beyond just the physical healing. This is an aspect of homeopathy we have all witnessed, but which has rarely been articulated to outsiders.

Dr. Harry van der Zee discusses how natural and man-made disasters traumatize whole societies causing them to evolve. He talks about the recent use of Genus Epidemicus remedies in treating collective trauma, which he sees as miasmatic and thus affecting future generations. With Genus Epidemicus remedies, he envisions an opportunity for homeopathy to be transformative globally.

Christopher K. Johannes, proposes a new role for homeopaths as credentialed mental health counselors, integrating homeopathy and counseling. He believes homeopaths are uniquely situated to do counselling, since they already use non-judgmental listening skills and have a framework to make sense of the client’s narrative (ailments from..etc). The interview process encourages the client to engage in internal reflection. Finally, homeopaths provide a model which explains the client’s suffering and how it can be relieved.

In the chapter “Treatment of Mental Diseases, A Clinical Diary”, Dr. Seema describes nine cured cases, including a woman institutionalized for 20 years with paranoid schizophrenia cured with two doses of Sepia.

Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman ND, discusses behavior and learning problems in children, covering everything from case taking and analysis to prognosis. Dr. Philip Bailey presents three case histories of Multiple Personality Disorder. Dr. Edward Shalts gives us strategies for managing patients who are on psychotrophic drugs. These are a handful of examples of what is offered in this work.

For many years homeopathy has operated beneath radar to the extent that astonishing works of healing, almost routine in our field, have gone unnoticed by the medical establishment. This book may serve as a bridge to that community as it also provides a rich resource for homeopaths.
