Interviews

Dr. Pawan Pareek

Written by Alan V. Schmukler

We interview Dr. Pawan Pareek, renowned for his treatment of deep pathology and “incurable” cases.

Dr. Pawan Pareek, M.D. (Hom) started his clinical practice in the city of Taj mahal, Agra, India in 1993 with a determination to cure difficult and “incurable” cases. His goal was to promote practical homoeopathy worldwide by his evidence based research work. He often sees over 100 patients a day, many with deep pathology. His writing is published widely and he is a regular speaker at national and international conferences.

AS: Welcome to Hpathy, Dr. Pareek. From the beginning you decided to take on some of the most difficult cases. What was your purpose in doing that?

PP: Treating difficult, “surrendered” cases increases the essence of homoeopathy in the “atmosphere”. Homoeopathy can do it, and I had a thirst to do that.

AS: You have said that you want to promote “practical homeopathy”. Could you explain what you mean by “practical homeopathy”?

PP: Sharing the rich practical (clinical) experience from my busy outpatient department of approximately 150 patients with severe diseases like brain tumor, brain haemorrhage, hydrocephalus, uterine fibroid, fibroadenoma of breast, cirrhosis of liver, big ureteric calculi, benign or cancerous prostate, post operative recurrence of tumor etc. Well documented cases supported by pathological, and radiological investigations before, during and after, informs readers that homoeopathy not only treats simple but also severe diseases successfully and helps to promote homoeopathy faster. Seeing is believing!

AS:   Yes, curing such cases makes a deep impression. What special methods or case taking approach gives you success in these deep pathologies?

PP: To treat severe pathologies, keep in mind to treat your patient, never mind the disease. I follow the Kentian method where importance to mental symptom is given. For this, knowledge of disease and knowledge of materia medica is required. Everything depends upon what you are asking and how you are asking. Along with that, you must be a very good observer. Mental symptoms are to be observed rather than to be asked about. Success will automatically touch your feet.
AS: I once treated a patient by phone for a couple months without success. It wasn’t until I saw him and heard him speak that I recognized his remedy. What should we know about properly taking cases online?

PP: The face to face prescription is best, but we are living in the modern world and must adjust ourselves to the present conditions. The case taking script remains the same during telephonic or online treatment. We must have a very good imagination during online treatment, and for this you will have to keep your mind alert. We can request a photograph of the patient to study the facial expression or can take the case via SKYPE. The online case once received, must be read carefully, and incomplete answers can be completed by further questions until we are satisfied. The simillimum will come out automatically.

AS: What are the mistakes homeopaths most often make in treating serious pathology?

PP: The first mistake is inaccurate case taking and the track is missed in the very beginning. The second mistake is lack of knowledge of diseases. One must know whether homoeopathy can cure, palliate, or improve the quality of life, or whether  you need the help of other experts. One should know its limitations. The third mistake is limited knowledge of materia medica. In emergencies or with serious pathology, time is often short and judgment difficult. An immediate decision is required. The fourth mistake happens after you’ve arrived at the simillimum and the patient starts feeling better but then improvement stops. Cure cannot be completed if the practitioner lacks the practical application of Organon of Medicine and the case is spoiled. To overcome these mistakes, there must be in the mind a hunger to treat severe pathology.

AS: The popular wisdom is that structural problems can only be helped by surgery. Can you summarize one your cases where you made progress without surgery?

PP: Most of the surgical cases have a medical aspect and can be very good candidates for homoeopathic medicine. Here is a case of Hydrocephalus:
A six month old, the only child of the parents, was suffering from hydrocephalus and otorrhoea. He was under the treatment of a neurologist and ENT specialist. Discharge through the ear stopped completely.

Past History: Recurrent cold and cough immediately after birth.
Family History: His sister died of hydrocephalus at the age of five.
The senior pediatrician and neurologist tried but failed and at last the case was
referred to a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon immediately advised surgical placement of a ventricular shunt. The child’s mother was not interested in surgery. She knew all the complications of ventricular shunt as she had lost her daughter who suffered from the same disease. In the mean time, the child had high fever, so the pediatrician prescribed some antipyretic and antibiotics, and the fever was gone. But then the child became unconscious and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

I was asked to see the child in ICU. I remember the neurosurgeon and paediatrician asked, “Dr. Pareek, can homoeopathy bring this child out of this unconscious state?” After inspection and observation, my answer was a confident, YES! Investigation before treatment found both lateral, third and fourth ventricles dilated – hydrocephalus. The child was completely unconscious, head enlarged, mild swelling on face, eyes half closed and squinting. Trembling and twitching of his whole body. Urine scanty, extremities cold to touch. Rx: Zincum met 200 in drops was administered sublingually. Within three hours the patient became conscious and Otorrhoea started. The swelling on face and head remained the same. Urine –scanty. Trembling all over body was not seen, but fidgety feet persisted.  Four days later- Zincum met 200 was repeated at bed time.
Seven days later restlessness started. Face bloated, head enlarged. Thirsty- withdraws mouth from breast and sips water. Urine scanty. Painless offensive stool. He was chilly by nature. Rx: Arsenic Album 200 weekly at bed time was prescribed. Condition improving: swelling over face disappeared and size of head reduced. Frequent sipping of water stopped. Urine –better. Restlessness very much reduced.

Rx : Arsenic album 200 weekly at bed time repeated.

Investigations During Treatment : Lateral ventricles are mildly dilated. Third ventricle is dilated. Opinion –mild hydrocephalus with cerebral atrophy. Patient could not come to clinic as he developed a severe cold, cough and fever; attendants gave allopathic drugs to get quick relief. When the patient was brought to me, Bacillinum 200, a single dose was prescribed.

After 2 weeks, Arsenic Album 200 continued as before. Investigation after Treatment: CT scan of the brain is within normal limits. Homoeopathy pulled the patient from the very jaws of death when he was unconscious and saved the patient from unnecessary surgical placement of ventricular shunt and its complications.

Sick people in the scientific era are looking towards homoeopathy anxiously in situations of crisis. It is the responsibility of homoeopaths to show well documented cases supported by pathological or radiological investigations before, during and after treatment, so negative perceptions of homoeopathy will change.

AS: Cases like that should persuade any legitimate critic. Sometimes surgery is needed, as in Kidney transplants. How can homeopathy help in such cases?

PP: Like other sciences, homoeopathy too has its limitations; we can reduce the burden of drugs from the patient, lessen complications of transplantation, improve the quality of life, increase the life span of the patient and save him from untimely death. I presented my work at the Liga in Berlin, 2005 on Kidney failure. There are no specifics in the homeopathic system of medicine, but vast clinical experience indicates that polychrests which lessen complications include Apis mel, Ars Alb, Phosphorus, Uranium Nit, Apocynum Can, Zinziber.

A middle aged man was suffering from kidney failure and was under my treatment. Blood urea and Serum creatinine were 104 and 6.7 respectively. Homoeopathic medicine helped to decrease blood urea and serum creatinine to 71 and 3.9 but was not helping further. But with these symptoms, he was leading a normal life. Somebody advised him to go for kidney transplantation and his mother was the donor. Ten months after transplantation, S Creatinine increased and protein in urine was seen. Anxiety, fear, insomnia and swelling of feet developed. Arsenicum alb calmed her mind, renal parameters improved and intake of drugs was reduced. Nephrologists prescribe immunosuppressant drugs, but homoeopaths prescribe immunostimulant drugs.

AS: One condition that is particularly difficult is Parkinsons. Could you give an example of any success you had with that, and offer any guidance to homeopaths treating that condition?

PP: The word, surrender is not in my dictionary but I always keep the limitations in mind to give honest advice. Parkinson’s, though a difficult disease, can be benefitted by the simillimum. Primary symptoms of this disease include tremor, stiffness, slowness, impaired balance, and later on a shuffling gait, but a homoeopath should give importance to secondary symptoms like anxiety, depression, and dementia. The simillimum can treat completely in the initial stage. In long standing cases, homoeopathy helps the patient to lead a long, productive life for many years after the diagnosis. There are at least sixty drugs for Parkinson’s disease but I’ve had success with Arg nit, Agaricus M, Ars Alb, Gelsemium, Merc sol, Phosphorus, Plumbum met, Zincum met.

AS: Could you discuss any special considerations in treating AIDS cases, and perhaps briefly refer to a specific case that improved on homeopathy?

PP: AIDS is a new venereal miasm. The two other venereal miasms, the Syphilis and the Sycosis are bacterial and the new the third, the AIDS is viral. Though the miasm is new, its homoeopathic treatment is not new at all. As we do in all other diseases, acute or chronic, we record each and every case of an AIDS patient according to the directives of the Organon and then we select the medicine on the basis of totality of symptoms. Of course, all available medicines in our repertoire may not be sufficient to cure patients infected with the AIDS virus. I have a large number of AIDS cases and have been able to weaken the AIDS virus, relieve the symptoms like fever, diarrhoea, oral ulcer, tiredness, and swollen glands.

A middle aged lady got infected with AIDS from her husband, who subsequently died. The lady presented symptoms of painful loose motion with pain relieved after stool, for which I gave ALOE SO 30, which helped her in the beginning. After some time, the loose motion started again with a “never get done” feeling, for which MERC SOL 200 came to her rescue. Once the Gastrointestinal symptoms were better, she started worrying about the future, family and children. ARS ALB 200 not only calmed her anxiety but toned her nervous system. She was able to lead a peaceful life with occasional symptoms which were within the reach of homoeopathic medicines, although she still remained positive for the AIDS virus. This is just a sample from a large number of AIDS cases in my OPD. I am confident that eventually, homoeopathy will not only weaken the virus, but assist the body to kill it.

AS: Thank Dr. Pareek for sharing with us today. I hope your success in difficult cases will open the eyes of critics and encourage other homeopaths to pursue such challenging cases.

  • DEAR DR
IN ALL CASES I FIND DR PAREEK HAS USED ARS ALB. IT WILL BE KIND OF HIM IF HE DISCLOSES HIS PRACTICE OF USING ARS ALB IN ALL HIS CASES. HE ALSO SEES 100-150 VERY DIFFICULT CASES EVERYDAY HAVING TAKEN TOTALITY OF SYMPTOMS AS PER ORGANON OR BY HAVING ONE LINE SYMPTOM/DISEASE LIKE ALLOPATHS. WE WILL BE GRATEFUL IF HE DISCLOSES HIS SECRETES
    THANKS
