Ailments of the back are generally increasing in number. There exist various reasons for this fact, like prolonged sitting at office jobs, lack of exercise,…. They will not be discussed here, though they need attention. Sometimes pain in the lower back hits the patient all of a sudden and unexpectedly just as heart attacks do. In some cases, the patient is condemned to immobility in the very acute state.
If the homeopath is called, help is awaited with the same speed as the strike in the back has appeared. In literature suggestions on the best remedies are easily found. Depending on the source, the number of remedies usually is pretty small.
Therefore, cure seems to be very simple. But if we take the repertory, we will be astonished, how many remedies caused the acute state of pain in the lower back – Lumbago – in their provings. In the Complete Repertory, you will find 459 homeopathic medicine for back pain (Homeopathy for Back Pain)!!
Many experienced homeopaths will use one of their standard remedies that approaches the symptoms of the patient well enough and relief usually follows. How will a novice in homeopathy deal with the case if he or she is under pressure to act quickly and if the patient is not able to stand a thorough casetaking? What can be done if the patient’s pains do not change after getting the remedy? One way the therapist easily can find the best remedy is by looking for unusal, uncommon symptoms. These will only be found in one or very few remedies.
This is why I started to search for nuggets in the case of lumbago. Which symptoms are found just in one to three remedies only? If you scroll down the page, here they are. Not all remedies found in the rubric of lumbar pain possess nuggets. You will not find them in the list. All the others are here!!
For those who have not been working with a repertory yet, the homeopathic language will sound really strange. But this language enables us to follow a steady scheme throughout the repertory. Without it, the book could never be that compact as it is and the search for symptoms and remedies would be an endless undertaking. What easily can be recognized is the fact, that the symptoms are arranged in the line of from common to special. The sign of << means aggravation (agg.), the sign of >> means amelioration (amel.). The different colours of remedies have to do with their valency found in the rubric ‘Back – pain – general – lumbar region, lumbago’.
The valencies are as follows: Abrot = 1; Agar = 2; Aesc = 3.
The red colour states that the remedy is a nosode (Med).
The first column describes the symptoms as stated in the Complete Repertory. The second column states the remedy(ies) that go along with this symptom. If a remedy is of a higher valency, I did not enlist the other remedies at this place. This is why you find just one remedy in the middle column, whereas the next column, ‘No. of remedies’ shows a 2 or a 3. The remedies of lower valency are still here. You can find them in the lower part of the list.

I have never encountered a list as presented to you in this article. It will be up to you to evaluate it as useful or not. Please send me your feedback! Whatever your judgement may be – the list tells you how thoroughly a homeopath has got to listen to the patient’s words when taking a case.
Thank you, Siegfried, for a wonderful article. It will surely be a big help for anyone finding an acute remedy for lumbago.
Excellent article! An achievement indeed!
