Topic: Anxiety NWS quitting smoking, drinking Posted: 23 Oct. 09 at 01:56 |
|
I have a patient who has had severe anxiety issues since quitting drinking a couple years ago(had been an alcoholic previously) which was significantly worsened when she recently quit smoking as well. I feel like this has to be useful info but I don't know where to look to make use of it (rubrics, etc.). Can someone point me in the right directions?

What i understand from the post is that the patient is undergoing a sort of withdrawal syndrome. At this stage it would be best to see a homeopath,who could do a complete case taking and prescribe a remedy based on totality and keep the Miasmatic aspect in mind.
If you are a homeopath then take the totality and prescribe.What was the etiology?How did it all start,the drinking and then quitting;These need to be looked into.
I am sure other opinion will also surface and help you in the right direction.Good luck;

The drinking started as a social response. The patient was 13, the social group she kept were older (high school) and were drinking, so she started in order to fit in. Before she went to AA, she says she was essentially drinking all day every day for every possible reason. I'm not sure the cause of starting smoking. Of interest is that she never had any problems with anxiety over public speaking before this. When she quit drinking it began to develop, and since she quit smoking a month ago (for the second time) she has terror at even the idea of getting up in front of an audience. Her anxiety also manifests in suden panic attacks where she fears to pass out in front of other people, has to find a bathroom or similar enclosed space to get into. When I asked her if it was the open space or the people that was the worst factor she responded that it was the people.

People with emotional disorders (Panic disorder, Anxiety disorder for example) often use alcohol, and especially cigarettes to mask it. Not only that, but recovery from substance abuse can be fraught with problems - the drugs have usually caused quite a bit of damage both psychologically as well as physically. This is a common situation and the most important thing to remember is that it is the unique and individual response to the substance abuse or recovery from such, that matters most to us, not the name of the substance or the fact that they abused it (which is, unfortunately, extremely widespread in our culture). Don't focus on the alcohol and cigarettes, just on the problem the patient has.
