Topic: WinCara Dongle Posted: 07 Aug. 05 at 13:16 |
|
I am a registered owner/user of WinCara version 2.5s. In order to function, the program requires that the proprietary dongle which came with the software be plugged into my computer's parallel port (LPT1). I am about to purchase a new laptop which doesn't come with a parallel port (apparently, USB ports have replaced parallel ports). My question: Is there a way to access WinCara without a parallel port? A search of WinCara at Google brought up Miccant Software, and I wrote them; but my letter has been returned. Does anyone here know if there is a way to access WinCara on a computer without a parallel port? Thanks.

You'd probably have to write to Win CAra and buy another harware that will match the port you have.

doctorleela, thanks. That's really my problem. I contacted the address on the software (which I have been using for about ten years), and was told they are no longer there and "left no forwarding address". According to Google, Micant Software sells the program, but my letter addressed to them was returned by the Post Office as undeliverable! I will continue searching, but I have a feeling I may be out of luck. Anna

Mostly the companies does not replace dongle keys to be fixed at USB port. Companies demand "undertaking".
Few companies sell new dongle keys on half rate to old customers.

CompUSA and many other computer hardware & accessory firms sell a device that will convert a USB plug into a Parallel plug. It's called a USB to parallel converter. Go to Google and search for "USB to parallel converter". Be sure to include the "quotation" marks.
Hope this helps.

I too have an older dos program which I use a dongle that plugs into my LPT1. I also bought a laptop which only has usb ports. I recently bought a "USB TO SERIAL DB25 DB-25 FEMALE PARALLEL PRINTER CABLE" via e-bay. This allows my dongle to plug into the same type of port that was on the back of my old computer then into a USB port. This dongle is discontinued by the manufacturer. If I get a new usb dongle from them, I would have to switch to a newer windows version of the program which I don't want to (I still deal with other businesses that only use the dos version). I have tried to plug a printer into the opposite end of the dongle to see if the cable works (and it does) but when I try to launch the dos program, I get a " You have not installed the dongle" message.
What I need to know from anyone is, how do I assign a USB port to make it a LPT1 port? I figure if I make it a LPT1 port, it should recognize the dongle. I think this might help both Anna & I in getting this dongle thing working. Bt.w. Anna, if this can be made to work, just copy & past "USB TO SERIAL DB25 DB-25 FEMALE PARALLEL PRINTER CABLE" into e-bay & you will get a Hong Kong seller that sells this for $2 plus s&h. I will keep testing the responses. Then hopefully we can get back to enjoying our olf but faithful programs.

Have you thought of putting Cara as a programme on one of the new memory sticks which will fit a laptop, it's a small rectangle port if that helps, and run the programme off that. It stores all results etc. this is how I do mine on the laptop so I can work away from home. I am not totally brilliant with computer language so perhaps someone else can make this more clear.
I know that if you write to Miccant about Cara they refuse to work with you, will not answer questions and there is no longer any support for Cara. They only care about Isis. Those who only have Cara, if they ever lose their dongle or activation codes, will be forced to buy Isis so you need to do back ups of the programme now and these memory sticks are the best thing I have found so far. Sadly my Cara is just the small one 1.4, but it works for me. Good Luck in sorting out your problem. I think Miccant are being very silly. You paid for the programme and they should help you regardless of the fact that they no longer care.

Hi, You may want to check here
http://www.itascacg.com/support_keys.html at the bottom of the page
they have suggestions to enable the lpt1 in the bios of Toshiba
laptops. I'm working on a similar problem but haven't purchased a
laptop yet, hope this works for your dongle.

I have a similar problem. My dongle has to go into the printer.....don't ask me why but a screw came out and now I have no Dongle and I cannot get into the programme. Cara is not being supported if you are an old customer that I do know, in the UK that's for sure and my friend who had a similar problem in the USA has run into the same opposition. They seem to be trying to convert everyone to Isis. I have Cara and asked for some support on how to use a feature and got a very rude e.mail back saying they would no longer answer questions on Cara. So as I don't know how to get a Dongle or any way round this problem I have a useless programme! Good luck to you. Ellie

The problem for users of Software with Parallel Port dongles comes up more and more frequently as computers are developed which no longer support parallel ports .
USB to Parallel adapters are not a solution . However for Laptops there are PCMCIA Card adapters which will allow the computer to recognise the Parallel Port Dongle [CPD ] - they are rather expensive -- around 100 US Dollars --- but they do replicate a genuine Parallel Port .
For Desktop users there is a cheaper solution -- that is to add a PCI Parallel Port to the computer -- these are around 30 US Dollars --- this does necessitate opening up the case of the computer -- which is a job that might require a little bit of experience with computers .
Both of the above solutions are far cheaper than having to buy an upgraded programme with a USB Dongle [ CPD ]

why do you want to struggle so hard, it is just easy as havina a sip of tea in garden, friends you need to get a usb to parallel port converter kit available in ebay in the computer acessories section, you can install your dongle to your converter plug which is attached to your computer usb, you need to install driver cd to work with your recently updated acessory.

ANNA Always use registered program. But for trial purpose, you can use unregistered software of carapro complete in all respect (all mm and all reps) and does not required any dongle key.
He is distributing to all over the world.
