School Shootings and Psychiatric Drugs Update

The author makes a compelling argument in documenting the association between acts of random violence and prescription drugs.

So here we go again, 26 dead, including 20 precious kids, in the Newtown, Conn. elementary school shooting. Once again the media, the townspeople, the politicians and most Americans will grapple with the tragedy and wonder what could have set the gunman off. However, a few of us who know precisely what in fact causes school shootings wonder what must transpire before clueless Americans wake up to the primary cause of such senseless tragedies?

NOTE: First article posted March 2nd:

At the risk of being labeled masochistic and knowing that as before, ignorance will probably win the day, I nevertheless try, try again. The shooter, Adam Lanza has already been labeled with a “personality disorder,” and some of the media’s all-time favorite excuses are being bantered about – a difficult home situation, bullying classmates, video games, and/or some kind of psychobabble fiction – all attempting to explain away this horrendous event, so that it can be conveniently forgotten until the next school shooting, when the cycle starts all over again.

Religious justifications have been invoked to assuage those who are shocked and suffering from their tragic losses as they pray for answers. Of course at this early stage in the healing process this is necessary, and my prayers go out to all who have suffered from this horrendous act. But since anger may necessarily be invoked at some point in the grieving process, wouldn’t it be refreshing, if for once, community rage were later focused on the actual villains behind these tragedies?

So if we get around to removing “the log from our own eye,” we only need to ask one simple question to determine what compelled Lanza to act this way. That question is: What psychiatric drug(s) and/or psychotropic chemical(s) was he taking or withdrawing from?

Sometimes simple questions are the hardest to ask. The media is forbidden to ask that question because their very existence depends on Big Pharma sponsorship. That question might jeopardize Big Pharma campaign contributions leading to political disasters for some politicians (footnote 1). And don’t hold your breath waiting for most Americans to ask this question, because as a nation we are consuming psychiatric medications like candy.

As we sniffle and dry our tears while watching pictures of the beautiful children and dedicated professionals who were slain by a 20-year-old undoubtedly driven into psychotic violence by a cocktail of psych meds probably potentiated by illicit drugs, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and/or sugar (footnote 2) CNN advertises a special report featuring Dr. Sanjay Gupta (footnote 3) Prescription drugs ‘orphan’ children in eastern Kentucky which was aired at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday and will be aired again Sunday at 7:30 a.m. ET Sunday (12/16/12). This special report is about deaths due to pain killers, but CNN’s sponsor, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, markets 2 killer opiates meperidine and nalbufine. When will a media special report appear, “One Nation under Big Pharma, with Corruption and Violence for All”?

Attempting to deflect the blame from their Big Pharma masters, the media began beating the drums for gun control legislation before the dead were even identified. The media ignors brain-toxic Timothy McVey (footnote 4) or the relationship of Khat-intoxication to Islamic Terrorism (footnote 5) and perhaps most gun-blaming morons are too young to remember the old saying; speed kills. Where were the guns in the Oklahoma City or World Trade Center atrocities? There were no guns, but toxic, addicted brains are always present at mass killings.

Incidentally, did you notice that those annoying Cymbalta ads disappeared? Were they pulled to attempt to fool some of the people all the time, or to fool all the people some of the time?

School Violence

The following are reports of teens committing acts of school violence during an 18 year period from 1988-2006 (footnote 6), beginning only one year after the first SSRI antidepressant was approved for the U.S. market for adult use only. More than half of the teens committing these acts were taking SSRI antidepressants.

1988
1. September 26, 1988, South Carolina: James Wilson, 19, went on a shooting spree in an elementary schoolyard in Greenwood, killing two 8 year olds, and wounding 7 other children and 2 teachers. He was taking Xanax and for the eight months prior to the shooting had been taking several psychiatric drugs.

1997
2. October 1, 1997, Pearl, Mississippi: Luke Woodham, 16, shot two students to death and wounded seven others after beating and stabbing his mother to death. Public reports say the boy was taking Prozac.
3. December 1, 1997, West Paducah, Kentucky: 14-year-old Michael Carneal was on Ritalin, when he started firing a gun during a prayer meeting at a high school, killing three teens aged 14 to 17, and wounding five other students, including one who is paralyzed.

1998
4. March 1998, Arkansas: Andrew Golden, 11, and cousin Mitchell Johnson, 13, went on a shooting spree at Westside Middle School in Arkansas, killing four students and one teacher. Nine students and a teacher were also wounded. In a review of the book Teenage Rampage: The Worldwide Youth Phenomenon, both boys were reported to be taking Ritalin.
5. May 21, 1998, Oregon: 15-year-old Kip Kinkel murdered his parents and then proceeded to school where he opened fire on students in the cafeteria, killing two and wounding 22. Kinkel had been taking Prozac and an amphetamine.
6. Pocatello, Idaho: An unnamed 14 year old held 5 classmates hostage with a gun. He surrendered to the police and fortunately no one was hurt. He was taking Zoloft.

1999
7. April 16, 1999, Idaho: 15-year-old Shawn Cooper fired two shotgun rounds in his school, narrowly missing students. He was taking a prescribed SSRI antidepressant and Ritalin.
8. April 29, 1999, Taber, Alberta: An unnamed 14-year-old student from W.R. Myers High School shot two students, killing one. He began taking prescribed Dexedrine immediately prior to the shooting.
9. April 20, 1999, Colorado: 18-year-old Eric Harris, the ringleader in the Columbine massacre was taking Luvox that the coroner confirmed was in his system through toxicology reports. He and his co-shooter, Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 others before killing themselves.
10. May 20, 1999, Georgia: 15-year-old T.J. Solomon was being treated with Ritalin when he opened fire on and wounded six of his classmates.
11. December 6, 1999, Fort Gibson, Oklahoma: 13-year-old Seth Trickey fired at least 15 shots at Fort Gibson Middle School wounding four classmates. He was undergoing psychological counseling and was probably being medicated, although those records are sealed.

2000
12. March 7, 2000, Williamsport, Pennsylvania: Elizabeth Bush, 14, was taking Prozac when she shot at fellow students, wounding one.

2001
13. January 10, 2001, Oxnard, California: A 17-year-old gunman fired shots at Hueneme High School before taking a female student hostage. He was later shot and killed by police. Prior to the shooting he had been treated for mental illness and was probably taking psychiatric drugs.
14. March 22, 2001, California: 18-year-old Jason Hoffman opened fire on his classmates, wounding three students and two teachers at Granite Hills High School. He had been prescribed the antidepressants Celexa and Effexor.
15. April 2001, Washington State: 16-year-old Cory Baadsgaard took a rifle to his high school and took 23 classmates and a teacher hostage. According to another student, “Cory was yelling and then he just stopped, looked down at the gun in his hand and woke up.” Fortunately, no one was hurt. Cory had been taking Effexor and had no memory of the incident.

2003
16. January 2003, Elliot City, Maryland: Ryan T. Furlough, 19, killed a Centennial High School classmate by spiking his soda with cyanide. He was being treated with Effexor.

2004
17. February 2004, Greenbush, New York: 16-year-old, Jon Romano strolled into Columbia high school in east Greenbush and opened fire with a shotgun. Special education teacher Michael Bennett was hit in the leg. The boy was treated with medication for depression.

2005
18. March, 2005, Minnesota: Jeff Weise, 16, shot dead his grandparents, then went to his school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where he shot dead 8 students and a teacher, and wounded 7 before killing himself. He was taking Prozac.
19. November 8, 2005, Jacksboro, Tennessee: Kenneth Bartley, a student in high school shot and killed an assistant principal. The principal and another assistant principal were wounded. He had previously spent about a year and a half in a residential juvenile treatment program, where he was likely prescribed psychiatric drugs.

2006
20. August 30, 2006, Hillsborough, North Carolina: Alvaro Castillo, 19, killed his father, then opened fire at Orange High School, wounding two students before surrendering to police. He had been involuntarily treated in a state psychiatric hospital, and such commitment nearly always involves drugs.
21. October 10, 2006, Charleston, South Carolina: Tyrell Glover, 19, took an air rifle to Burke High School where he planned to hold students hostage and be gunned down by police. He had been taking an antidepressant for several years but his mother took him off the drug when she saw the listed side effects in ads. However, Tyrell began taking Prozac again for approximately six months. Whether he was taking a psychiatric drug or withdrawing from it at the time of this hostage/suicide plan is yet to be confirmed.

The number of drug-related, school shootings are dwarfed by the number of non-school-related, violent events associated with psychiatric medication use and abuse. And many school shooting cases have had their court documents sealed, especially if minors are involved, and the extent of the chemical use is often never revealed.

The psychiatric, drug-related violence noted in the cases above was discovered mostly by reporters who dug up the data, usually reporting it as an “incidental” finding! We compartmentalize (footnote 7) drug-related, school shootings, from Michael Jackson/Whitney Houston-like-drug-overdoses, from irresponsible prescribing practices of most physicians, from the fact that drugs prescribed according to accepted standards of care are the 3rd leading cause of death in hospitals alone! (footnote -8) Compartmentalization is a psychological defense mechanism used to avoid the uncomfortable truths which emerge when we admit the truth.

Socrates said, “There is only one good; knowledge… and only one evil; ignorance.”

Yes, Lanza’s acts of violence, as well as all the others listed above, are evil. However, a more fundamental evil lurks in the shadows behind these school shootings – the pervasive ignorance about the power of psychiatric medication to amplify the very behaviors they are marketed to relieve; violence against oneself (suicide) and against others (murder).

Drastically altering the function of brain chemistry with chemicals that life has never before encountered over vast eons of time, can’t not have unpredictable results, especially in children and teens who have not matured completely and don’t possess normal adult checks and balances on impulsivity.

I am astonished that this obvious, scientific fact is still denied by most people. You don’t have to be a recovering drug or alcohol addict to admit that people who consume these chemicals are “powerless” over their behaviors. You don’t have to be a functional medicine and genomics expert like me to see the light. Just look at the facts and admit the inconvenient truth.

The question is not “do psychiatric drugs cause violent behaviors?” The right question is, “how can these drugs not cause violent behaviors?”

The sooner you admit the truth, insist that your politicians wake up and devise rational policies about psychiatric medication use and abuse, hold drug companies and healthcare professionals accountable for fraudulently misrepresenting “drug therapies” as therapeutic, and warn those in your inner circle of friends and family about this menace to civilization, the sooner we can reclassify psychiatric drugs as obsolete therapies and dispose of them in the trash bins of history.

Well, on second thought, we might need to be cautious about flushing these drugs down the toilet because due to their widespread use and abuse, they have made their way into lakes, streams and other bodies of water, and are now in the drinking water in many municipalities (footnote 9). So watch out when you swim at your local lake or pond this summer, because some of the fish might be imbibing psychiatric-medication-laced water, and who knows what a trout driven into murderous, psychotic rage would be capable of!

  • DEAR DR,
YOUR RESEARCH IS VERY GOOD. CHILDREN BEHAVIOR DEPENDS ON RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR PARENTS. PARENTS GO ON JOBS AND THEY HAVE NO TIME FOR THEIR CHILDREN. MECHANICALLY THEY LOVE THEIR CHILDREN VERY MUCH. IF CHILDREN GET ILL THEY WILL GET THEM BEST TREATMENT BUT NO TIME .THERE IS AN OTHER PROBLEM WHICH CHILDREN ARE DISTURBED WITH MENTALLY VERY MUCH. THEIR FATHER MOTHER ALWAYS QUARREL. THEY DO NOT ALLOW THEIR CHILDREN MAY BE ONE YEAR OLD TO SLEEP IN THEIR ROOM. MORE OFTEN THEY DIVORCE AND CHILDREN MENTALLY HANG AND DO NOT KNOW TO WHICH SIDE TO GO. THEY GET AWEFULLY NEGLECTED, IRRITABLE AND REVENGEFUL THEY GET DRUG ADDICT THEY HATE OTHER CHILDREN ASSUME THEY ARE HAPPY. THEY TAKE REVENGE AND SHOOT. INDIA IS ALSO ADOPTING THE SAME CULTURE GRADUALLY.
    THANKS
    DR SHEKHAR

  • Outstanding and thorough article! I once took the SSRI homeopathic Hypericum for nerve pain and instead got benefits and proving just like the SSRI Prozac side effects. It didn’t help my nerve pain, but I felt more relaxed/happy at 30c, then ignorantly took 12c and got the following proving symptoms over 5 days, all seem typical in prozac-using killers who are paranoid and suicidal:
    1) frightful paranoid delusions leading to dreams of demons attacking me,
    2) the paranaoia led to rage I needed to kill others before they got me, then
    3) feeling once I did kill others, I’d still have to kill myself after since life was hopeless anyway.
I was experienced enough to know these were just false feelings and I shouldn’t take them seriously. BUT, I sure could see how a drugged immature person could mistake them for reality and act!!
All these symptoms disappeared 4 hrs after my last dose of Hypericum 12C and I was back to normal.
Prozac must also have a homeopathic-like effect of beneficial similimum vs. frightful proving. Which side one gets must depend on whether one has the correct SSRI/Hypericum/Prozac symptom picture or not. God help us when the wrong adolescent takes it.
My one very minor quibble is we have a modern liberal view to blame companies mostly. They don’t pretend to be our friends/wise gatekeepers/idols, like doctors and the political class do.They are not tyrants that force or overly influence people to buy bad things. That happens when the political class academics, media and regulators take control of an industry for their own selfish purposes and use their legal power and emotional influence to make us buy. Doctors pretend to be our pure advisors and make us trust and idolize so they can act as deceptive drug salesmen.
Pharma marketers have an obligation to shareholders to sell their products and so, as most humans, deny side effects they don’t see directly. We know who they are and would never let them control us directly. It’s the pseudo intellectual Drs, scientists, media, and regulators that pretend to help and make us take the garbage by fiat or by convincing us they know better than we do and we must obey them as false idols. W/o them, pharma would have no more influence than when Detroit sold bad cars and we stopped buying. Doctors’ sin and betrayal of us is far greater, more personal, far more contrary to morality. (We should distinguish between levels of sin, betrayal, truth!)
NOTE: I’ve had about 100 iatrogenic ailments caused by drs etc., especially by NSAID drugs, orthodontic TMJ, and bodyworkers jamming bones and nerves. Test-based, customized homeopathy has saved my life from that several times.

  • A couple more things:
    1. A few yrs ago there was a story that a happy, vibrant female college student w no problems became a test subject in a Prozac trial and so then hung herself in the Prozac lab, completely shocking everyone who knew her. Is that true?
    2. Back in the 1990s, GQ magazine had a stunning Ritalin article which seems basically a proving. A writer was normal w no hyperactivity. He took Ritalin for several months to see what chronic use might be doing to so many children. He was horrified by the result. It pulled him into his mind away from reality to a psychopath level of obsession where he had no concern for his own feelings nor anyone else’s. He lost his girlfriend and other friends while on Ritalin because he ignored their calls. It made him obsessed with doing a repetitive task to the exclusion of all normal life. I believe he typed the same phrase over and over all day and night like in “The Shining” movie and did not want want to stop for any reason.
He said Ritalin clearly can make boys controllable by making them quiet and task-focused on the outside, so the adults pretend it’s fine, but on the inside horrors happen. His report was ignored by media and authorities.

  • A simple rule followed could save you from lot of unpleasantness. Do not take any pill for something which is self limiting and follow strict dietary discipline during such times. When you really need a doctor go to a proper homoeopath.
