People always come to us last. By the time they get here, they've
already been poisoned, mutilated, and relieved of their life savings.
Nonetheless, they believe they've taken the right steps in seeing
the "real" doctors first. If only they knew that the modern
medical paradigm is built on a faulty premise!
Don't get me wrong, it really is a good idea to get a proper medical
diagnosis; this makes the homeopath's job so much easier; but after
this obvious advantage, modern medicine frequently takes a sharp
turn off the main road and heads straight for a deep cliff, careening
and lurching dangerously until finally crash-landing in a ravine.
What is the fatal flaw here? Symptoms are presumed to be the disease
itself! In reality, symptoms are the body's own best effort at self-healing.
Consequently, modern medicine is at war with what's best in the
human body and allows what's unhealthy and disordered to go untreated
and uncured.
I'm sure that medical students are correctly taught what the immune
response is all about; that fever, for example, is an effort on
the body's part to incinerate bacteria and other unwelcome guests;
and yet, the treatment for fever is suppression! In fact, Suppression
is the goal of the modern medical paradigm.
Lesson-one: Suppression is not synonymous with elimination. It
means what it says, "holding down". Why would we want
to hold down our immunity?
Symptoms are a sign of vitality; if you can put out a strong symptom,
a high fever, for instance, the way most children can, you've got
a strong, healthy immune system. But, in our misguided point of
view, we panic when we see symptoms like these and want them stopped
immediately! We believe there is no down-side to this, no price
to pay for suppressing the immune system, but, in fact, here's what
happens: a steady downward spiral of ill-health, with those afflicted
becoming more and more dependent on their antibiotics, laxatives,
nasal sprays, bronchodilators, anti-inflamatories, sleeping pills,
and antacids. Why does this happen? Because a healthy body will
continue putting out a symptom as long as the underlying predisposing
factor remains unchanged. It's the Underlying Cause that has been
neglected in this single-minded pursuit of Symptom Management.
Does your doctor inquire about your lifestyle, what you eat and
drink, how much stress you're under? Homeopathic patients are always
surprised at what the homeopath asks: What do you like to eat? How
do you react to weather and temperature? What part of life do you
have the most difficulty coping with? We may discover, for instance,
that a person's back pains began after sleeping on a water bed or
with an electric blanket.
When we are sure that we have removed the obstacles to the cure
or the causative or maintaining factors, we then try to find a homeopathic
remedy that mimics (is similar to) rather than opposes the symptoms
the individual has. We want to be friends with the body's immune
system, we want to be supportive and unantagonistic; and believe
it or not, the body shows its appreciation for this by getting well!
