A Brief History of Homeopathy in Cuba

Written by Myrna Quintero

Homeopath Myrna Quintero presents a brief history of homeopathy in Cuba.

cuba1We can divide the history into two periods.

First period:
Homeopathy was introduced into Cuba in 1826 by the Cuban medical elite, who used to go to Paris for their studies. This was at the time Hahnemann lived in Paris with his wife Melanie.

1846 The first homeopathic pharmacy was established in Havana.

1846 Francisco de Paula Escofet was the first to practice and to spread homeopathy in Havana.
At the end of 19th Century there still existed a chair at Havana University.

1911: Juan Antiga, MD who had assisted in the introduction of Homeopathy in Mexico, returns to Cuba and establishes an office in Havana.
Second period:

1992: The Juan Antiga Group of Homeopaths was created in Havana. Some years later the Cuban Society of Bioenergetics and Natural Medicine and the Juan Antiga Group becomes a Section of this Society. Also, the National Group of Homeopathy was formed.

1992
Homeopathic professors primarily from Mexico, Argentina and Brazil contributed to the rise of Cuban homeopathy. Also, homeopaths arrived from Italy, Spain and the United States (Homeopaths without Borders) to teach short courses. Professor Izao Carneiro from “François Lamasson Institute” (Brazil) and professors from “Homeopathy of Mexico” each taught a diploma course (2-3 years). They came to Cuba for one week every three months. After that, the Cuban Homeopathic School was founded and taught the first diploma course. The first graduation of physicians, Stomatologists, Pharmacists and Veterinarians of this School was in 1997.

1995
In this year the 55th Pan-American Congress of homeopathy was held in Cuba. In 2003, the 59th Pan-American Congress of Homeopathy was held here. In 1997 the First National Homeopathy Congress took place in Havana.

Homeopathy is approved by the Cuban Ministry of Health. There are homeopaths in all provinces. Of course, I believe that like everywhere else, allopathic doctors often stand in opposition to Homeopathy.

The Homeopathic Section of Havana meets once a month. I passed both Diploma courses. Below are a couple photos of my graduation.

  • Thank you Dr. Quintero for this brief history of homeopathy in Cuba. Homeopaths in the U.S. hunger for knowledge about our brother and sister homeopaths in Cuba. We would like to hear more about how you practice and the cases you work through.

  • As I love Cuba and love Homeopathy too, one of my fervent wishes is to see an excellent

    homeopathic school in Cuba.
