Sulphuricum acidum for chronic alcoholism corresponds to inebriates on their last legs, who are pale, shriveled and cold, whose stomach will not tolerate the slightest amount of food. It suits the sour breath and vomiting of alcoholic dyspepsia.

Some Remedies for a Cold

I have got a Cold – probably from returning from hot steamy Singapore where my son, partner and grandchild live, back to cold, miserable Southport so I thought I would write a little about colds this month!! My first line of defense is Vit C , about 3000mg throughout the day (some take 6000!!), Echinacea and Zincum met. My colds rarely last more than 2 days. I don’t like to suppress a cold as I feel it is the body’s way of letting the built-up toxins get out naturally. However my sister always swears by taking homeopathic Aconite 30C immediately, as it normally stops it in its tracks. Useful remedies to know of for a cold are:

Aconite – The main clue here is the sudden onset of symptom especially after exposure to very cold, dry windy weather.

Arsenicum – The most telling clue here is the onset of illness in the middle of the night, especially between 1- 2 a.m.. The person may wake with chills, diarrhoea or vomiting at this time. She is often anxious, may fear that he/she is seriously ill and demands company. She is chilly and wants hot water. Very restless.

Belladonna – Hot and feverish with a red colour to the face. Pulsating headache.

Coccus cacti – Mucous membranes of throat, respiratory tract and urinary organs are mostly affected by this remedy. It produces a catarrhal condition and irritation in these sites. This remedy is well indicated in violent paroxysmal cough ending in vomiting or raising much clear ropy mucus.

Nux vomica – You know those colds where it doesn’t matter how many blankets you’ve got around you, you still feel shivery when you move . This remedy warms you up in about in about 10 minutes!!

Phosphorus – This type of cold can quickly go to the chest. There is a strong desire for large quantities of cold or iced drinks, and the person wants company.

Some Constitutional Remedies for Susceptibility to Colds

Homoeopathic remedies frequently aid in breaking up a constitutional tendency to take cold. We append the indications for a few sterling remedies in the way of prophylaxis.

Alumina — This remedy is of particular efficacy in case of old people who take cold from the least exposure to a draft of cold air. Such patients are frequently afflicted with obstinate constipation.

Calcarea carb — Useful in persons of leucophlegmatic temperament, who are liable to take cold at every change in the weather. Especially indicated in case of teething children, who are subject to colds in the head, attended by oppressed breathing. Infants who do not assimilate their food well, and have swelling of the glands of the neck ; adults who suffer much from cold, damp feet.

Nux vomica — Useful in overcoming extreme susceptibility to cold in persons who are subject to frontal headaches and attacks of vertigo, occasioned by deranged stomach. Likewise, in persons whose catarrhal attacks are fluent during the day and dry at night; the symptoms are worse in the morning, and the patients are troubled with constipation. Always useful where the patient has taken freely of so-called tonics, or has employed drastic medicines.

Pulsatilla — Should be considered in case of persons of a mild disposition and phlegmatic constitution. It is especially indicated as a prophylactic of taking cold where the catarrhal attacks are attended with pronounced derangement of the digestive functions; also when the eyes and ears are prominently affected.

Sulphur — Suitable in persons who suffer from an unhealthy condition of the skin, shown by roughness, cracking or a scaling of the cuticle, chilblains, nettle-rash, etc.; often, in cases where Sulphur will prove of service, there is an herpetic saddle across the nose, or the patient complains of a congested condition of the nose, with a tendency to bleed.
