Dear Dr. Mark,

The olive groves of my province, Salento (the heel of Italy), are brutally hit by a bacteria killer xylella fastidiosa, otherwise known as Pierce’s disease, already known in Canada for attacking the screws and for which there is no known cure (at the moment). The bacterium is propagated, probably via the bites of a Cicadellidae and leads to the death of the plant. In Salento are the oldest trees in Europe, more than 2000 years old, and these wonderful sentinels are just olive trees. The infection spreads very quickly and the most infected area extends to 8,000 hectares. I’m talking about the death of an entire territory as the Ministry of Agriculture.  I urge your help, I send you some pictures of my biological father of the olive, to a lesser extent affected by the bacteria but that is in one of the worst affected areas.

Dear Plant Doctors,

I have a 7 year old Avocado tree, Stewart variety. This cultivar is frequently sold at local nurseries, as it is one of the most frost tolerant varieties for my climate (USDA 9/Sunset 14).  Although this tree is vigorous (approx. 12 feet tall) with glossy full foliage and appears healthy in all respects, and I fertilize on schedule, I have yet to get a single fruit.  I have not seen flowers on it the last two winters. Research indicated this variety does not fruit well in my climate…not warm enough in the winter for good flower production or reliable fruit set.  I hate to give up on this tree, could a remedy help?

Thank you!

Claire Green

Dear Claire,

You can alternately spraying Natrum Muriaticum 30 and Viburnum op. 3D after 7 days.

Dear Sir,

I would like to know the quantity of medicine or mixture required per plant or specified area. The vegetables are bitterguard, snake guard, tomato etc. and rubber and arecanut trees. In rubber trees, the leaves are shed due to fungus attacks during heavy rain.  Sprouting of fresh leaves are affected by mildew. Leaf fall is seen controlled a little by Silicea, but not effective. I applied Silicea mixture at the rate of 100 liters per acre (43500sq feet) containing 200 trees. Please advise regarding medicine and quantity.

Farook Shafi

Dear Farook,

You can alternately spray Mezerum 200 and Secale cor 30c after 7 days.

Hello

Is there a remedy for acidic soil? I am using a small plot at a chicken farm. The soil is clay. I have been adding compost and am slowly changing it. There is moss covering a lot of the soil. Is that indicative of acidity? The growth of vegetables is very slow and poor germination with poor development of fruit (although tomatoes do well).

Thanks

Chana
