In memoriam Dr. Diwan Harish Chand

It is with great sadness that I write that our respected teacher, Dr. Diwan Harish Chand has passed away this morning (13th Dec 2011). I pray to God to give the strength to bear this massive loss to Dr. Diwan Harish Chand’s family and the entire Homoeopathic fraternity.

Diwan Harish Chand was born on 7th March 1924 at Lahore (Punjab). He graduated in medicine (M.B.B.S.) in 1945 and spent more than 60 years in the study and practice of Homoeopathy. He acquired the highest qualifications in Homoeopathy and in general medicine. He had vast clinical experience working in hospitals in the UK and USA and with Dr. Pierre Schmidt in Switzerland.

He was actively involved in teaching programmes and lectures in many countries for the last 50 years. Dr.Diwan represented Indian Homoeopaths for many years at LHMI as its President. He also served as Vice President of the Central Council of Homoeopathy. He served Homoeopathy in various capacities both at official levels as well as at the institutional level. He participated in more than 50 international Congresses (including 25 of LMHI).

He is the only Asian President and later President of Honour of the international Homoeopathy medical league (L.M.H.I.). His years of toil and relentless perseverance had conferred upon him more than 20 awards, National and International and numerous honorary diplomas and fellowships. This included the most prestigious award in medicine-the Dhanwantari award having been adjudged “The most outstanding medical man of the year.” This award is for all disciplines (Allopathy, Ayurveda and Homoeopathy) and he was the first homoeopath who received it.

On 24th April 2011 Dr. A.K. Walia, Honorable Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Delhi, conferred the Homoeo Rattan Award, first ever to Dr. Diwan Harish Chand, for his contribution to the cause of homoeopathy in a function celebrating the 256th birth anniversary of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. It was organized by the Board of Homoeopathic System of Medicine and Delhi Homoeopathic Federation.

The 1st December LIGA 2011 also expressed their respect by honoring him. He was the honorary physician to the Presidents of India from 1969 to 1997. Dr. Diwan Harish Chand’s painstaking efforts, have given to Homoeopathy priceless works like: A Compendium of Lectures on Homoeopathy; Microdoses Megaresults (Clinical Cases) and Homoeopathy in Geriatrics and co-edited with Dr. Pierre Schimdt, Kent’s Final General Repertory. He has been a member of every Homoeopathy committee of the government of India during the last 50 years and chairman of committees on research, education and pharmacopeias.

He was actively involved in social service avenues of the Rotary club of Delhi; in civil defence; Aids Awareness and Family Welfare programmes. Besides all these activities he was a sportsman, keen photographer and philatelist.

Dr. Diwan Harish Chand’s demise is an irreparable loss to the Homoeopathic Fraternity. His writings will live with us and he will always be remembered for all the great things he has done for our wonderful healing art.

May his soul rest in peace.

  • Dear Colleagues

Dr.Diwan Harish Chand was an examplary homeopath. I met him first at Siri Fort Auditirium during his enthusiastic lecture on the history of the last 55 LIGA annual congresses.

Today I came across his foreword in the book “Systematic Materia Medica” authored by Dr.K.N.Mathur.

He was a true help to homeopathy and homeopaths.

Accept my condolence on such a gloomy occasion. I hope we can do our best to keep up his excellent work for man’s health and welfare.

    God Bless him.S.Sadeghi

  • The demise of Dr. Diwan Harish Chandra is an irreparable loss to homeopathy locally, nationally
and internationally. He was way too higher than others in the field. I have fond memories of
meeting him once in sixties. Dr Zutshi, Dr. K.N. Mathur, and Dr.A.H Rizvi had a meeting with him
at his residence at 2 Hanuman Road New Delhi regarding forming a Board of Homeopathy in Delhi
and leading a delegation to the newly elected Metropolitan Council. By the way, all of them
except Dr. Zutshi were allopath M.B.B.S converted to Homeopathy. I was with Dr. Rizvi. Dr. Harish
had a handsome figure, a chaste personality and a very impressive voice. Later, I had the occasion
to listening to him twice in professional gatherings. He has the pride of place in National and
International development of Homeopathy, but in Delhi he is like the founding fathers. Death will
surely feel defeated in trying to wipe off his name from the annals of Homeopathy in Delhi as well
    as india.

  • Thank you Dr. Bidani for elaborate information about conferment of various awards to
Dr. Harish. I think it was more of an honour to the award itself to go to him than he receiving
it. He was not merely a practitioner, he was a model in all aspects of the trade. To-day he
truly stands out as a legendary figure to be copied and imbibed. The best tribute to him will
be for us followers to keep the banner of Homeopathy flying high zealously, honestly and
    sincerely.

  • THE DEMISE OF DR HARISH IS VERY VERY HARMFUL TO THE HOMEOPATHIC COMMUNITY. HE WAS FOR HOMEOPATHY AND ONLY FOR HOMEOPATHY. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE. I SHOCKED FOR HIS DEMISE.
