This is the first of a series of books on homeopathic snake remedies. There is a part 2 of this book to come about Vipera Xanthina, Vipera Berus, Naja Tripudians and Python Regius and another book series for children. It is intended for all levels of homeopathic practitioner or student. Dr Pisios begins by saying that the most important symptoms that a homeopath should take into account are the mental symptoms and more specifically the ones that characterise the patient as a whole. He therefore feels it is most helpful to fully understand the essence and pictures of the remedies he presents, and rely less on the physical symptoms but to use them for confirmation.

Part 1 of the book starts with the History of the Materia Medica and contains a comprehensive classification of snakes and a discussion on snake venoms.

Part 2 goes into detail about Lachesis M, Vipera A, Bungaris L and Bothrops. For each of these remedies there are some cases, the essence and the picture of the remedy, together with a useful differential diagnosis. The cases are written in the patients’ own words rather than assumptions, as Dr Pisios points out. Part 3 is very short and talks about the essence and pictures of remedies in general and the health, disease and levels of disease. I wonder if this chapter would have served a better purpose at the beginning of the book.

A sentence in the first chapter wet my appetite when I read “You will also understand which patients need Lachesis despite the absence of loquacity and jealousy issues”.

“How drugs were discovered by the Ancient Greeks” was an interesting read as was the chapter on snake symbolism. What little is known about Theriac – an anti-venom containing up to 64 substances and used in 242-187 BC by the Greeks is discussed, and who would have thought there was a double blind study carried out on this substance by Galen in the 2nd Century AD!

The section on the general traits of patients who need snake remedies is excellent. Dr Pisios lists 61 snakes which can be found in the homeopathic pharmacies listed in references at the back of the book. I also enjoyed the vivid descriptions of what happens when someone is bitten by various classes of snakes, as this showed the very different uses we could prescribe them for on the basis of the Law of Similars.

The cases are beautifully presented in the patients’ own words but where the remedy is given I would have liked to know the posology used. Also in one case, the first remedy given – which presumably was not a snake remedy- was not revealed by name, which I personally found frustrating, as I had read the case with remedies in mind like most homeopaths do. Although there is an excellent Essence and Pictures of each snake remedy after its Cases section, I would also have liked to see a list of the reasons each case had been given that remedy.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this book for the following reasons. An awful lot of research has gone into this book and there is much brand new information for those who thought they knew all about the snake remedies. “The aim of this book is to make learning easy, simple and understandable” and this it certainly does. The book is very comprehensible and an easy read. A homeopathic friend who glanced through the book stated “the eyes slip over the words like satin because of the lovely the clear print”. The book is a pleasure to handle with good quality paper and contains many photographs and drawings.
