Structure of the bone
Bone is made up of minerals; consist of living tissues and non living substances; contains, nerves, vessels, collagen, and living cells including osteoblasts (helps in formation of bones), and osteoclasts(bone cells which removes old bone tissues).
In addition to this, bone also contains osteocyts, which helps in metabolic exchange with the blood that flows through bone tissues. Bone also possesses a bonding of fibers and chemicals known as matrix. Including primarily collagen fibers and crystalline salts, the crystalline salts deposited in the matrix of bone are mainly composed of calcium and phosphate.
Requirement of bones
The primitive function of bones as armor-plating is still obvious in certain parts of the human body. Such as the skull, this forms a complete protective case around the brain, or the ribs, which do the same thing for the heart and lungs.
Bones also provides the support that keeps the many components of the body together and upright. When the body thinks support is no longer needed-such as in the prolonged weightlessness of space flight; or after a long bed rest-the bones lose their strength and will break easily if put under strain; another vital use of bones is a girders to which muscles may attach. Muscles provide the power to move the various limbs and body parts, but they can do so only by moving the bones relative to each other.
The body, with great economy of space, uses the hollow cavities inside bones for the manufacture of blood cells. The bones are also store another vital substance of the body- calcium.
