Diagnosis of warts

Majority of warts are diagnosed of the basis of clinical presentation.

Slightly raised above the skin surface, common warts are growths that can be very small, or can be large and clustering.

They usually occur on the hands, but they can also seen on the face, knees, and elbows. They are usually elevated, flesh-colored single papules with scaly; irregular surface. This type is usually asymptomatic and multiple in numbers, planter warts occur on the soles of the feet.

They are often surrounded by a color of hardened skin, and they can cause pain with walking. Warts that are not raised or rough are called flat warts and are often seen on the face, neck, and extremities.

Genital “moist” warts are single or multiple soft masses that usually appear around the anus, the vagina, or the penis. Occasionally, they can obstruct the urethral meatus or vaginal introitus.

The incubation period for genital warts ranges between 6 weeks and 6 months, although much longer periods are possible. The virus is transmitted predominantly through sexual contact. These are usually asymptomatic, but they can itch, burn, or cause local pain. When untreated, venereal warts resemble cauliflower masses.

Sometimes biopsy is needed for differential diagnosis from carcinoma or other possible diagnosis.

Prevention of warts

  • Maintain hygiene and take care of damaged skin so that it can be prevented from infection.
  • Do not share towels, shaving kits, shoes from the person having warts.
  • Use contraceptives during intercourse.
  • Do not pick and cut your warts
