Homeopathy for Enlarged Heart

Enlarged heart is medically termed as cardiomegaly. It is a situation where the maximum width of the heart shadow is greater than 50% of the maximum internal width of a person’s thorax. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat enlarged heart symptoms but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility.

Enlarged heart is medically termed as cardiomegaly. Cardiomegaly is a situation where the maximum width of the heart shadow is greater than 50% of the maximum internal width of the thorax.

Causes of enlarged heart

Hypertrophy – caused by an increase in after load of a particular chamber (e.g. aortic stenosis, hypertension).

Dialatation – secondary to toxic, metabolic, or infectious agents causing myocardial damage.

Hypertrophy of either ventricle does not usually enlarge the heart shadow unless there is synchronous dilatation. Cardiomegaly or enlarged heart is usually abnormal except athletes, and is associated with other cardiovascular pathology.

A globular shape occurs with pericardial effusion on generalized cardiomyopathy.

Left ventricular dilatation causes lengthening and rounding of the left heart border and a downward extension of the apex.

Right ventricular dilatation lifts the apex off the hemidiaphram.

Left atrial enlargement causes a double density along the right heart border. Comprising the left and right atrial edges. Other signs include left atrial appendage prominence and bronchial splaying of the bronchi at the carina.

Enlarged heart symptoms

Clinical manifestations of enlarged heart

An enlarged heart is less efficient in providing adequate blood flow to the body and itself. Therefore, clinical manifestations of enlarged heart are primarily to those of heart failure (e.g., dyspnea, dizziness, fatigue). Additional symptoms are arrhythmia, angina, and sudden death. Other manifestations are sign and symptoms particular to the specific disease causing the cardiomegaly.

Diagnosis for enlarged heart

Complete history and physical examination

  • Associated symptoms may include fatigue, dyspnea at rest and/or on exertion, palpitations, dizziness, or syncope
  • Note use of alcohol or recreational drugs
  • Family history of heart disease or sudden death

Chest X-ray and ECG

Echocardiogram is indicated in all patients to evaluate for valvular disease, chamber size, wall motion abnormalities, and ventricular function.

Stress testing of coronary artery disease is suspected.

Cardiac catheterization may be indicated to evaluate for coronary artery disease and valvular disease.

Laboratory studies may include CBC, ESR, electrolytes, BUN/creatinine, glucose, TSH, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous.

Blood culture are indicated in some cases.
