Women with symptomatic fibroids experience abnormal uterine bleeding. Heavy menses (menorrhagia) or menometror rhagia may be observed. Fibroids most often present with pelvic pressure, menorrhagia, or menometrorrhagia. Fibroids often reach a size at which they cause symptoms of nocturnal frequency and urinary leakage; much more rarely, compression of the ureter leads to renal compromise. Women with large fibroids may note an increase in abdominal girth, or a hard mass in the lower abdomen may be accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms, such as constipation.

Fibroids may cause dyspareunia, infertility, or first trimester miscarriage. Obstetric complications of fibroids second trimester loss, intrauterine fetal growth retardation, preterm delivery, preterm labor, and placental abruption. The degree of symptomatology may bear no relation to the size of the fibroid; a small intracavity uterine fibroid may cause substantial uterine bleeding, and a large pedunculated subserosal fibroid may remain asymptomatic.

Women with symptomatic fibroids experience abnormal uterine bleeding. Heavy menses (menorrhagia) or menometrorrhagia may be observed.

Diagnosis of fibroid

Diagnosis of fibroid mainly include full pelvic examination that include rectal exam. Unless a rectal exam is done, fibroid can be missed. Large fibroid can usually be felt in pelvic examination, depending on where they  are located, smaller fibroids can also cause symptoms, particularly if patient has numerous small fibroids. Generally, an ultrasound test or a laparoscopy will confirm whether or not patient has fibroid.

If you have abnormal bleeding, then an endometrial biopsy should be done to rule out a hormonal deficiency. Hysteroscopy can determine whether there are more fibroids on or under uterine lining. Sometimes these fibroids can be removed through the hysteroscopy.
