Osteoporosis is the reduced bone mass per unit bone volume. This leads to reduced strength and increased risk of fracture often with even a minor trauma. The bone mass decreases with increasing age and osteoporosis is common in post-menopausal women as oestrogen prevents bone resorption. This group is more prone to fractures specially colles, neck of the femur, and vertebral sites. As people are living longer and more sedentary lives, incidence of osteoporosis is expected to continue rising.

Diagnosis of osteoporosis

History of fracture

Fracture associated with osteoporosis are – vertebral fractures, hip fractures, colle’s fracture of distal radius.

Radiographs

Of dorsolumber spine – prominence of vertical trabeculae, generalized loss of contrast between bone and soft tissue. Also at times vertebral biconcavity or investigation of the disk in to the vertebral spongiosa. Collapse of vertebrae and anterior weding of vertebral bodies may be asymptomatic.

Bone density measurements

Several techniques are available:

Dual energy X- ray absorptiometry (DXA) allows measurement of bones of clinical interest (i.e. lumber spine, proximal femur, distal radius and ulna and calcaneum).

Quantitative CT allows three- dimensional measurements of the BMD of lumber spine. It allows measurement of trabecular bone alone.

Quantitative ultrasound measurements are usually made on the calcaneum. The attenuation of the signal may reflect both the density and architecture of bone.

Bone biopsy

may be useful in unusual forms of osteoporosis. It provides information about rate of bone turnover and presence of secondary forms of osteoporosis. Patient with high bone turnover usually respond to antiresorptive drugs.

Biochemistry

Exclude secondary osteoporosis

  • Primary hyperthyroidism(serum calcium)
  • Thyrotoxicosis
  • Multiple myeloma(ESR, protein electrophoresis, urinary bence-jones protein)
  • Osteomalacia(serum calcium, phosphate, alkaline phasphatase, 24 hours urinary calcium and creatinine)
  • Malabsorption syndrome(full blood count)
  • Hypogonadism in men(testosterone)

  • I am happy as Dr. Lance sensitive treatment of Osteoporosis using herbal medications touched me deeply.
I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis, my medical condition was heart broken. The first thing I did was get myself informed. I was subjected to different medications, by my doctors for treatment without the assurance of having a permanent cure. Despite my visit to several doctors my health wasn’t getting better, I took Fosamax 70 mg once weekly for nine months until I could no longer endure the side effects. I’ve made many lifelong friends when I was looking for a natural cure for my ailment. At the verge of giving up, I went to the internet to search for a treatment at least. But I found a cure instead. I read a testimony of a lady just like mine and the good news was that after using herbal medicine she was cured. She shared an e-mail address about the Doctor who treated her using Herbal Medication without complications. I was lucky to have access to Herbal Medicine, and have a pretty normal life now. I am 64years Sure, it has been challenging, and there have been many ups and downs, if you’re having Osteoporosis this is not the end of the world don’t ever lose hope. I want to tell you that you need to learn to love yourself just the way you are- you are a special person that deserves love. Never never never give up!!!! • I am so happy for you and would like to also find the cure for osteoporosis. I am seeing a Endocrinologist for treatment. Last year I was given an infusion by IV. For about 3 or 4 days I felt like I had the flu.
