Peripheral neuropathy is a condition of the nervous system that causes numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness; it usually begins in the hands or feet and can be caused by certain anticancer drugs.

The peripheral nerves are the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. When there is damage to the peripheral nerves, peripheral neuropathy symptoms depend on which type peripheral nerve is affected. There are three types of peripheral nerves:

Sensory nerves allow us to feel temperature, pain, vibration, and touch.

Motor nerves are responsible for voluntary movement; they allow us to walk and open doors, for example.

Autonomic nerves control involuntary or automatic functions, such as breathing, digestion, swelling, and bowel and bladder function.

Cause of peripheral neuropathy

  • Drugs – isoniazid, vincristine, heavy metals, cisplatin.
  • Metabolic – e.g. diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease (renal failure).
  • Alcohol abuse (with or without vitamin B1 deficiency.)
  • Guillain Barre syndrome
  • Malignancy-e.g carcinoma of the lung, leukemia, lymphoma.
  • Vitamin deficiency (e.g. B12) or excess
  • Connective tissue disease or vasculitis
  • Hereditary – e.g hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy
  • Others, e/g amyloidosis, HIV infection
  • Idiopathic

Peripheral neuropathy diagnosis

Because peripheral neuropathy has so many causative factors proper history and physical examination should be done. Viabration and monitoring tests are important in this condition during physical examination.

Blood tests, electrodiagnostic studies (nerve conduction studies, and electromyelography are also very useful tests in order to diagnose peripheral neuropathy.

Have been under medication clopidogril(75), ecosprin(75) and atorvastatin(20) for almost 10 yrs. For the last 4-5 months sympotoms of polyneuropathy have crept in especially in my left leg muscles. Slight limp has developed in the left leg while walking. Got nerve conductivity test and EMG. Some of the nerves have been found partially damaged. My atorvastatin has been replaced with rosulip 5mg. Apart from it I am taking CoQ 100 mg and meconerve forte (vit B12) injection(weekly) , in addition, for the past one month. I would like to have further professional help to treat this
