Dr. Sheetal D. Bidri treats an acute infarct involving the right middle cerebral artery and later administers Tuberculinum as a constitutional for a four year old girl.

You know you’re in the right profession when you’ve earned a smile. My journey as a Homoeopath has been slow, steady and an interesting one and the smiles of my patients became an integral part of my life. What makes it beautiful is when I see it on the children I treat. One such instance that changed my life was when I treated Muskaan.

The Consultation

On a gloomy night, a former patient of mine brought with her anxious parents and their four-year-old daughter M. with the sole history of the child suffering a sudden fall and having hit on her head while playing,on 11th Nov 2016. The mother thought of it as just another shenanigan of her naughty child and slapped her twice and took the child in her arms to observe that the child had lost power and strength in her left upper and left lower extremities. They rushed to the nearest hospital at Raichur where they ran tests and needed management at the higher unit which brought them to IGICH, Bangalore where they had to spend a fortune for the treatment.

At this moment, I asked myself if I needed more history. I quickly asked a few general questions which were vague and unclear. The child was irritable and withdrawing in nature but did not suffer any pains. The parents were anxious that their child wasn’t able to sit or stand, had lost complete power and sensation of the affected parts. The blood reports showed normal results and the MRI done on 12th Nov 2016 suggested an acute infarct involving the right middle cerebral artery area.

The Prescription

The parents were at first reluctant to use Homoeopathy and wondered how I could help them when bigger hospitals couldn’t. I was a bit nervous but I trusted my system of medicine. Before I could get to the prescription, an analysis was required with a paucity of symptoms. Since there weren’t any prominent generals in this case, I considered what was certain in this case and that was the etiology and its effect.

In Boericke’s Materia Medica I read that Arnica “Produces conditions upon the system quite similar to those resulting from injuries, falls, blows, contusions. It is especially suited to cases when any injury, however remote, seems to have caused the present trouble. After traumatic injuries, overuse of any organ, strains it. Arnica is disposed to cerebral congestion.”

Dr. N. M. Choudhuriregarded Arnica as one of the King of Traumatic remedies which is used in injuries of muscles, fractures of bones, contusion of the periosteum and sub-cutaneous and external hemorrhage due to mechanical injuries. Some Rubrics from the Complete repertory suggest the sphere of action of the remedy, such as,

Finally, after a quick analysis, I prescribed Arnica 30 three doses for 2 days on 14th Nov, 2016.

The Follow Up

On returning home on 16th Nov 2016, even before I got out of my car I saw this family walking towards my house and I saw M. walking down the lane with her parents. In that mirthful moment, I marveled at how homoeopathy changed this little girl’s life. After the 2nd dose of Arnica, the child was able to sit and have her food by herself and developed sensation in her limbs. The parents gave her the 3rd dose and the next morning the girl strolled around with her father. The parents called it a miracle but it’s just the science of homoeopathy. The withdrawing and irritable girl was far more approaching than the first few consultations.

One month after this episode, the parents sought help for her behaviour problems so I retook the case and found out the general disposition of the girl which suggested her to be hyperactive, slightly aggressive, naughty and misbehaving in nature. She constantly wanted to change her play or toys and desired to wander around her village. She was a lean girl but fast in her actions, who went against her parents quite often. The only thingshe feared was animals. She was a hot and thirsty individual, who suffered recurrent bouts of cold.

After the analysis, the girl received a single dose of Tuberculinum 1M after which they returned back to their village.

The family visited Bangalore after 3 months and was extremely happy with her progress. There were no signs of weakness in the limbs and her generals improved also. She had an episode of fever which subsided spontaneously on tepid sponging. Overall, she was active at home and also at her new school where she developed interest towards studies. Six months later, the father visited me to show me a photo of her looking healthier and having gained sufficient weight and of course with a sweet smile on her face.

After a year, her recurrent cold episodes had drastically reduced. Her physical generals like her appetite, hunger, bowel and bladder functions were good. Mentally, she was far calmer than before. Her aggressive behaviour was under control and she was more obedient.

This case not only made me more confident, it made me happy and satisfied. The scope in homoeopathy is limitless and it waits to be discovered. Simple remedies can work wonders when prescribed on their exact symptom similarity. The common myths what homoeopathy faces viz. it’s slow, it’s only for chronic diseases, it’s not for paediatrics and so on, can only be broken by treating with the right remedy at the right time.
