Too Occupied By Religion

Homeopath Maja Letić discusses the way various remedies express their religiosity. Belladonna, Calcarea carbonica, Cyclamen and Kali bromatum are among those mentioned.

The rubric RELIGIOUS AFFECTATION, too occupied by religion, we can find in Kent’s and all other repertories. It describes the state of a patient in which religious thoughts and feelings become highly emphasized. All the remedies in this rubric according to their own essences, have their own reasons and personal ways in expressing these feelings. In this article we will take a closer look into the religiousness of these remedies through the principle of individuality

Belladonna

Throughout the whole picture of Belladona there is a need for easyness. MIND – LIGHT – desire for. She hardly takes anything seriously and doesn’t like to think about the essence of problems; she has an “easy-go“ character. She is well known as a remedy for acute problems and that is also her attitude in other situations in life. Only what is current, visible and intensive can get to her mind. She doesn’t think about reasons nor about consequences. When something pulls her out of the state of pleasant relaxation, her reactions are usually sudden and intensive. We could analyse Belladonna through the rubric:

MIND – SHRIEKING – alternating with – unconsciousness

Unconsciousness – the state of being unconscious when you are unable to use your senses.

Shrieking – to give a loud high shout, for example when you are excited, frightened or in pain

A number of delirium rubrics will contain Belladonna.

It is enough for her to have things looking the way she wants them to look, despite that picture being untrue. Belladonna is the only remedy in the rubric MIND – DELUSION – magician, is a, meaning she is certain that she can make impossible things look possible and it is enough.

She is not ready to invest effort and dedication. Even if we find her in the rubric INDUSTIOUS, we know that her work is superficial, often without purpose and without results. She just works without the effort to get things done. She doesn’t think about the real meaning of things or situations.

MIND – DELUSIONS – business – ordinary, they are pursuing

MIND – DELUSIONS – engaged – occupation; he is engaged in some – ordinary occupation

MIND – DELUSIONS – business – doing business; is

MIND – DELUSIONS – work – hard; is working

That is the case with her religiousness as well. Belladonna will emphasize the formal aspect of religion, the rituals and features without understanding of real purpose. We can recognize this through gestures. She will cross herself a lot, look up to the sky, talk about God, light the candles and cross herslef again, talk prayers (or make some other gestures tipical for other religions).

My observation leads to conclusion that many priests could be Belladonna patients.

The other part of the rubric belongs to the state of delirum in which Belladonna, as a remedy for acute miasms, falls when she realises the seriousness of the situation. She doesn’t have an abillity to see the situation as it is, nor to make a proper strategy for finding the solution. Everything comee into her mind sudenlly and very intensively. That is why we have a number of rubrics connected to delusions, evilness, devil and fear of him. When the danger passes, she returns to her state of relaxation and unconsciousness.

Calcarea carbonica –Whose God is the real one?

MIND – RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS – too occupied with religion – bible all day; wants to read the

We are familiar with this rubric due to Stramonium being one of the most religious remedies. But are we avare that this rubric also contans Calcarea, and that it has more points than Stramonioum? We could start understanding Calcarea carbonica with the following event.

A woman around 50 years old, an art historian, was talking to a group of tourists about history and architecture of the museum when the group of foreign tourists entered the church. Even though she is not a nun, she had her hair covered with a scarf and she was wearing a long blousy dress like those nuns wear. Her voice was deep, religious. On the church door there was a sign warning that taking pictures is strongly forbidden, but tourists didn’t mind. She talked about church being a place where heaven and earth come together, which means that every prayer spoken here is also spoken in heaven. Everything happening up there, is also happening here, and vice versa. She talked about how we could clear our soul and make the world a better place through praying.

When she noticed the flashes from the camera, with sharp voice she warned newcommers that it is forbidden. They didn’t react and it was obvious that they just didn’t understand due to being foreigners. She became more angry. With even sharper voice, she repeated her warning in English and they stopped taking pictures immediately. Still very angry and upset, she turned back to her group and said: ’Don’t ever be ashamed of your religion and never alow others to degrade you! Are you aware of the fact that there are over five thousands of religions, and only we, Christians, have the God who is alive? The true one! Do you understand how lucky we are because our religion is righteous? From all of them who bow down to fake Gods, only our one is real! That is why we will be chosen to be saved when the world commes to an end.’

It was obvious that this incident left astrong impression on her while nobody else got upset about a few photos. Also, nobody else reacted to the fact that those people were foreigners, nor did anybody else feel unsafe or humiliated becouse of that. That was her key of sensitivity. We are special, we are chosen because our God is true. In the era of rasing global awareness of religious tolerance, when ’we all see the same while interpreting it differently’, this lady had an exclussive heritage over the real God. And also over salvation when the End of the world arrives according to the Bible. Let’s follow this through our rubrics:

MIND – RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS – too occupied with religion

EXCLUSIVE, too

MIND – DELUSIONS – visions, has – horrible

MIND – RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS – too occupied with religion – metaphysical concerns

EXCLUSIVE, too – only to be used by one particular person or group; only given to one particular person or group (Oxford)

We see rats as pests that provoke disgust due to the dirt and the places they live in. We consider them the transmitters of diseases and their number frightens us. Some researches say that for every person on the planet there are 4-5 rats. Isn’t this exactly how Calcarea feels? She is special, exclusive, the only one who has the real, live God. She sees other people as rats, pests that multiplied so much that they need to get exterminated. Fire is an element of destruction, it wipes out everything. MIND – THOUGHTS – persistent – murder, fire and rats; of nothing but

MIND – DELUSIONS – animals – persons are animals – rats, mice, insects etc.

MIND – DELUSIONS – rats, sees

MIND – DELUSIONS – rats, sees – running – leg; up the

MIND – FEAR – rats

MIND – TALKING – murder, fire and rats; of nothing but

MIND – THOUGHTS – persistent – murder, fire and rats; of nothing but

EXTREMITIES – RAT running up the leg; sensation of a

A person with extreme religious attitudes could be a Calcarea carbonica personality.

Crotalus cascavella –  my connection with dear ones who died

The huge theme of every snake is death. Everything related to death causes deterioration for them. In Materia Medica the most common snake is Lachesis, and most of the time we will get to this snake through repertorisation. That is because Lachesis is the most known and one of the most perscribed remedies. However, if we recognize snake themes, we should search through other sources of information about them. Let’s take a look at one example: This statement was of a patient who was cured with Crotalus cascavella:

’My father was sick a long time before he died. I had to cope with that somehow. It was certain that he would die. I knew it even through my dreams, as if I could predict it. When my brother lost his life… I can’t explain what that was. Was it sadness? I started choking for the first time. It was winter, the month of January, mother calls me to come and say goodbye to my brother, but I couldn’t. When I saw him in the box… facing the fact that he was gone… Fuck life. I couln’t accept that. How? I was still a kid and even then, I knew he didn’t leave, he just transfered to something new. I live with this belief because it’s easier that way. I can’t accept that he’s gone. It’s too hard and painful. After brother’s death, my mother became mentaly ill. She has never recovered. That pain she went through was so strong, she didn’t deserve it. I got to some other sphere of understanding of life and death in order to survive. I can’t accept that my dearest are dead although 30, 40 years had past. I’m still communicating with them in some way. I go to church and light a candle. That is how I talk with them. Otherwise I’m not a religious person. My religion (faith) is my connection with dear ones who died. ’

Religion deals with lots of questions, some of which are the questions of life, death and afterlife. Crotalus cascavella will be preocupied with this aspect of religiousness and she will use it to keep her connection with the dear ones who are no longer alive.

Cyclamen – children attached to the father

MIND – ATTACHED – father; children are attached to the

What is the first thing that commes to our mind when we think about Cyclamen?  How well do we know him? In APG3 classification he holds the number 664.34.17 (Lysimachioideae, Primulaceae, Primulales, Ericidae, Asteranae, Angiospermae).

660.00 – The Asteranae class according to Sholten evolved last and we can see the gradual increase in impact of lantanoid aspect of plants. They have the initiative and love to work and build this world. They are introspective, they love to contemplate and meditate. They search for the causes within, not in the outer world. They don’t blame the world, nor fight with it. They take responsibility for their own lives and the world in general.

664.00 – Ericidae can’t decide if they want to live their lives normaly, dictated by the social rules, or they would prefer to live freely, by their own rules. They fight a lot with their dark side, with their shadows. They want their freedom, but are not able to win it.

664.30 – Primulales want their freedom and to make their own choises but also to satisfy others and adapt well.

664.34 – Threatened by father. Not coming to full blossom, blaming others for it. Felling limited, stopped, narrowed: by society, relatives, their body. Feeling guilt from making the wrong shoices. Delusion neglected their duty. Delusion having done wrong.

A lady in here early 30’s  admitted she had met a man over the internet and that they had been corresponding for a while. She called him her virtual lover. She says: “I felt so lucky. My body could hardly endure so much happiness. No one’s ever talked to me that way. I felt like he knew my soul. I got married early in my life and had children. I had no other partners before my marriage. It was a miracle for me. I felt like it was destiny. Then we agreed to meet. We met once, but nothing happened. Then my husband figured it out. Only one look from him could trigger my fear. He started spying on me, eavesdropping on my conversations, going over my cell phone. He made a false internet profile as a woman, befriended him and flirted. He wanted to show me that the man was bad and I am nothing special for him, that I am only one of many women on the internet. I was thinking my husband steals my happiness. At the same time I hated my husband and feared him. One day he told me to take care of the kids because he is going to kill himself. He had a drink and went out. I didn’t know if he would return. It was the longest night of my life and I felt a terrible remorse. I judged myself for keeping in touch with that man, wanting to be with him and hating my husband. My husband is a good man. I cut all contact with that man. It’s all over now, thank God.”

’We are not being created to enjoy ourselves, but to develop, and if we don’t, we fail to fulfill our duty to our Creator. A man is not made to enjoy this world and to be happy, but to grow spiritually. God is our Creator, our Father and we’re on a mission of obeying Him and learning… to try and fulfill every task He puts in front of us, because He knows what’s best for us. Creator is someone who teaches us through religion what to do, what our mission is and what is good for us“.

Religious affectation of Cyclamen  is a bond between a father and a child.

Kali bromatum

According to Scholten’s theory of elements Kalium and Brom belong to the series of Iron, fourth series in the periodic system of elements. They have the strong feeling of duty. After the series of Silica, where the focus was on the family and other close relations, the person meets the whole group, village or tribe and the laws they live by. Her task is to define her position within the group and to take her own place.

This domain is so small that everyone knows every member of the group, so life and behaviour of every person are being closely followed and rated by other members. The theme of this group of remedies will be the duty, work and task. They have a feeling of being observed, controled and critisized. If they don’t pass ’the exam’ they will have the feeling of guilt, of being bad, blamed and persecuted.

The essence of Kalium is simplicity, respecting and following principles, maintaining law and order. They don’t think much and they don’t give up to their impulses, because that leads to failure.

Whether he has a problems in work, emotional or family aspect of life, Kali Bromatum will always have the feeling of guilt as if he had done something wrong which will result in Gods’s punishment.

Bromium has the feeling of guilt because of not doing his job, feeling of being blamed and persecuted, feeling of losing control. Those are the highly passionate people, very sexual. Those instincts worry them and make them feel guilty.

Sexual desire and feeling of guilt in Kali-bromatum are therefore present in the following rubrics:

MIND – DELIRIUM – erotic

MIND – THOUGHTS – sexual

MIND – NYMPHOMANIA

MALE GENITALIA/SEX – MASTURBATION; disposition to

MALE GENITALIA/SEX – SEXUAL DESIRE – violent

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – MASTURBATION, disposition to

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – SEXUAL DESIRE – violent

MIND – AILMENTS FROM – sexual excitement

MIND – AILMENTS FROM – sexual excesses

MIND – AILMENTS FROM – embarrassment

Therefore we will find him in the following states:

MIND – RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS – too occupied with religion

MIND – DELUSIONS – religious

MIND – DELUSIONS – neglected – duty; he has neglected his

MIND – DELUSIONS – doomed, being

MIND – DELUSIONS – god – vengeance; he is the object of God’s

MIND – DESPAIR – religious despair of salvation

MIND – FEAR – wrong, of something

MIND – LOOKED AT; to be – cannot bear to be looked at

MIND – REMORSE

MIND – REPROACHING himself

MALE GENITALIA/SEX – ERECTIONS – wanting – sexual excesses, after

The rubric that deserves our attention is MIND – SADNESS – impotence, with. The ultimate feeling of being sinful and expecting God’s punishment can lead to impotense in man, and sterility in woman FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – STERILITY – sexual desire – with excessive. What they perceive as God’s punishment or revenge is actually self-punishment due to the feeling of guilt.

This exaggeration can lead to serious consequences which is the reason we put it in this rubric. Kali-bromatum can feel guilty for other things as well and these sypthoms are emphasized the most in repertorium.

In his final state we can find him dealing with suicidal thaughts and desires.

MIND – SUICIDAL disposition

MIND – SUICIDAL disposition – car; throwing himself under a

MIND – SUICIDAL disposition – thoughts

MIND – DEATH – desires

MIND – DEATH – presentiment of

MIND – DEATH – sensation of

Kali carbonicum

Kali carbonicum is another remedy that consists of Kalium, has all the caracteristics that belong to the series of iron and element of Kalium which we mentioned in Kali bromatum. Second element is Carbon and he makes a difference between these two remedies.

We will take another look in the Scholten’s theory of elements. Carbon belongs to the series of carbon which thinks about questions of individuality, values, meaning, ethics, differentiating good from bad and he belongs to childhood and questions relevant for that period of life.

The essence of Kali carbonicum lies in pursuit of stable values. Uncetainty, shyness and not knowing what their personal values are, those are the things that push them into this pursuit. They feel the need for stable values. Their pursuit is usualy shaped into the pursuit of father, of someone who makes the rules and provides resources for life.

Beside the father, for Carbon person’s other people of authority also play an important role. Those are the teachers, professors, priests and the highest of all authorities, the God himself. God is the key of all values.

Through religiousness and God, Kali carbonicum searches for stable values without questioning anything. That will be his guiding star through life. Where can we see the religious exaggeration which is the theme of this remedy? The rigidity and refusing to question or evaluate anything. Accepting everything as it is without personal attitude or responsibility. Kali carbonicum person will not take the responsibility for his own life, insted he will wait for the instructions from the person of authority and follow them without a single thought or word. As a child waiting for his father to tell him what to do.

Medorrhinum – In the same fruit both north and south freeze and bloom

Many authors wrote about Medorrhinum describing a picture of this remedy from their perspective and experiences, so we sometimes get the feeling as if they are not talking about the same remedy due to its wide range of symptoms. However, none of them emphasized that this remedy consists of the widest opposites and a strong desire to live life at its fullest, to experience everything they could. Philip Bejli calls it ’the passionate adventurer’. All authors emphasize their enormous need for sex, for pleasure of all kinds, but also a contrary state. A deep depression with complete absence of libido  could be indicators for this remedy. However, no religion in this world suppports this way of living. Despite all the differences, all religions agree with the demand for moderate and moral life. That doesn’t fit in the profile of Medorrhinum patient. Let’s see an expression of Medorrhinum personality.

Poem for my 27th birthday

(Branko Miljković)

I don’t need words anymore, I need time;
It is time when Sun tells us the hour;
It is time for flower to speak, and for mouth to be mute;
How can man who lives poorly sing out the truth?

I believed in dream and the storm,
enamoured I was by two nights at night
While in the same fruit both north and south
freeze and bloom.

Dreaming, I overslept all the holidays!
While tame thunder in the glass sang.
Put Fire back where it belongs, said
and kiss belongs in hell.

Even bread gets education underground;
I wish to fight on the side of evil;
With history’s mercy, still I will
puking enter the Eden

For friends I named crooks
enamoured with all that sings and harms.
before the pious water I shall be praying
’til my knees get numbed by stars

MIND – PRAYING – vomiting; constantly praying even with the

How can a person in love with immoral things be deeply religious? Only for the price of disgust for the sensual part of self. Neither could this person support it’s autenticity, not can he give it up. With the feeling of deep disgust he agrees on obedience. Author of this song commited suicide only few months after finishing it. He shot himself in the head at the age of 27.

MIND – INDIFFERENCE – religion, to his – not caring if he went to heaven or to hell

MIND – SUICIDAL disposition – shooting, by

This conflict resembles a little bit to a conflict of Lilium tigrinum with one important difference – Lilium tigrinum will care what others (for example religious community) think and she will fear the disapproval. Medorrhinum has a conflict with himself, with his own polarity.

If the conflict becomes so strong and exceeds the barrier of self control, the moral and religious part of Medorrhinum person looses the battle. He becomes indifferent whether he will go to heaven or hell. Religious themes no longer bother him.  A lot of criminals come to this state.

MIND – INDIFFERENCE – religion, to his – not caring if he went to heaven or to hell

Nux vomica

Around 600 years ago people came up with the idea that our sins could be redeemed with money. This was a practice for previous as well as for future sins that the person intended to do. The phenomenon was called indulgence and it was widely rooted in the catholic church, and wider in some other, formal or informal ways.

The idea of redeeming sins with money, no mather how big or serious they were, started slowly killing the motivation for self improvement. It was no longer needed to become a better person and stop making sins when you could just pay.

Nux vomica believes that everything could be made up with money. They are donators, mecene, they make humantarian contributions. Without understanding the link between sins and money, their behavior can be confusing. We often stay with the question how can a person do such bad things? Nux vomica want’s money  and material goods without thinking of the consequences of their ambitions. However, there is always money to make things right. Setimo se Titanika. U spasilačkim brodovima sa ženama i decom našli su se i oni koji su imali para da plate svoje mesto tu, iako im nije pripadalo.

When facing some serious illness or difficulties in life, Nux vomica will bitterly ask: ’Haven’t I given enough to the charity? Haven’t I helped enough people?!“ There and then, we understand how his actions were not humane, nor did they come from his heart. It was all just a form of trade.
