Two Cases of Disc Degenerative Changes with Sciatica

Written by BK Malhotra

B.K. Malhotra shares two cases of disc degenerative changes with sciatica. Calcarea Fluorica was an important remedy is both cases.

Case 1. A lady of 42 years settled in California (U.S.) had been suffering due to sciatica pain since 2008, causing problems in day-to-day life.

Analysis Of the MRI

In a number of places osteophyte growth had been observed due to which corresponding discs have been affected causing pain and pressing on nerve roots, including those of the sciatica nerve.

As patient was based in USA some difficulties were encountered in sending remedies from India and a simpler method was adopted by finding availability of remedies locally. The following remedies were advised:

1. To remove osteophytes which were creating wounds, swelling and pain causing prolapsus of discs which were pressing on nerves and disturbing their functioning:

Calcarea Fluorica 200 to be taken one dose in the morning and second dose in the evening.

2. Dr Reckeweg Sciatica Drops (R71  Aconitum D4  +Arsenicum Album D 30 + Colocynthis  D4 + Gnaphalium D3 MM +Magnesium Phosphoricum D8 MM. Dose 15 drops in a cup of water in the morning, afternoon and night.

Also advised that as improvement is observed the doses could be reduced to morning and evening.

She started taking the remedies from 12th July onwards. She started feeling  relief and informed me that her pains from different parts of body showed considerable reduction within 7 to 10 days, and after about two weeks all the pains vanished as she reported in her feedback on 18 August 2021.

MRI dated 20/10/2011

Case 2  A lady of 51 years living in Pune had been suffering from backache and sciatica for some time . Her MRI dated 30/03/2015 and 08/08/2021 revealed the problems on L5-S1,L1-L2,L2-L3,L3-L4 and L4-L5 level of lumber spine .

Scoliosis of cervical spine and mild bulges seen at C4-C5, C5-C6, and C6-C7 level are seen with thecal sac indentation.

The patient experienced problems in standing and doing daily chores and on advice from a close friend (a doctor) surgical intervention was arranged.  She  was to be admitted for surgical intervention on 13/09/2021. I advised her to try homoeopathic remedies which cost very little in comparison to surgical intervention. She agreed to try homoeopathic remedies.

The following remedies were advised:

To remove osteophytes which were creating wounds, swelling and pain causing prolapsus of discs which were impinging on nerves and disturbing their functioning:

3. For scoliosis of cervical spine Calcarea Carb 200 was prescribed one dose in the morning and second dose in the evening .

4. For any peripheral nerve problems I suggested Hypericum 30 three times daily.

She started homoeopathic remedies on 25/08/2021. On 12/09/2021 she reported her pains had reduced. She cancelled the admission notice from the hospital for surgical intervention.

On 11/10/2021 she abstained from medicines for a week and did not have pain and stiffness even standing for 6 hours.

Both patients under Case 1 and Case 2 are constantly being monitored and are improving.

  • Hello Dr. Malhotra ji,

Thank you very much for your nice cases and beautifully resolved by you.
Kindly let me know how much time gape is to be maintained between all the four medicines (I.e. : Calc fl, R71, Calc carb and Hypericum ) as a first dose — in Case No. 2. Whether they are to be given simaltansiouly one after the other?
Further a patient of mine is feeling burning and pricking pain inside the anal/rectum canal area while walking, while bending and also while eating,,( while biting the food ). Whether these pain can be due to the pinched nerve? OR they can be due to some .other causes?
In his MRI of the Lumber Spine, L5/L4 are impinging on the nerve

    Thank you for your clarification.

  • Dear Dr. Malhotra, thank you for sharing these cases, instilling hope in such a common debilitating disease.
Questions: which remedies would you have advised in case 1 if patient were in India? I assume these are the remedies given in USA?
And what would you have prescribed same if some spondylosis was involved as well? Thank you.
