IT is inevitable that nasal catarrh, sinusitis, polypoid growths, etc. should be very prevalent conditions in a civilization addicted more and more to a “Sodium habit”.
The nasal mucosa is an excretory tissue-its secretion like the perspiration of the epidermis, is derived from the blood and tissue fluids. When the external body perspires, it is washed and the tissue fluid exudate is removed. When the nasal and sinus mucosa secretes or perspires, the exudate fills the sinuses or dries on the nasal mucosa. Its chemical action on these tissues is dependent on the chemical nature of the blood and tissue fluids which are its source. If excessive blood carbonates are present-the nasal mucosa exudes or secretes chemical carbonates. When these carbonates reach the mucosal surface they undergo hydrolysis and the constant action of a dilute caustic hydrate is produced. Carbonates cause fibrosis, hydrates ulcerate and destroy. There can be no rational doubt that rhinitis sicca, polypoid rhinitis, frontal and mastoid sinusitis, are but the outward and visible evidences of an internal and invisible blood chemical abnormality.
Carbonate secretions are ideal culture media for microorganisms. These latter are blamed for the rhinitis and sinusitis, but without the carbonate blood condition and its carbonate secretions into nasal passages and sinuses, there would be no favourable culture medium for micro-organisms which are universally looking for a breeding place. The evidence of blood and urinary chemical analysis in these cases, now subjected to a multitude of local lotions and surgical procedures, together with the curative results obtained by therapies based on these evidences would make the medical treatment of these prevalent conditions a scientific one, and not, as at present, a hotch- potch experimentation based on removing effects, because they are troublesome and visible, and completely neglecting fundamental blood-chemical causes.
The prevalent and obviously futile use of sodium and other chemical douches, salves, etc., for nasal catarrh and sinusitis, before or after minor or major surgical procedures fails-the multiplicity of these agents and the concourse of patients who have sought their aid proves their failure-because the blood state, the carbonate- blood state, a condition readily proven in these conditions, is the source of the exudate which favour’s micro-organism life and toxin production. This is the fundamental cause and its effects with or without secondary germ activity can only be removed when the blood- chemical abnormality is recognized and removed.
Man cannot survive to carry out his activities without favourable nutriment, germs cannot survive and grow to produce their toxins unless they infect a favourable medium. This fact applies in the whole organic world and that of germs is no exception. Remove the carbonate culture-medium provided by exudation in sinuses, etc., from a carbonate blood-circulation and germ toxaemia is impossible because germ growth cannot occur.
This is another fundamental scientific fact, known since the days of the germs discovered by Pasteur, but like the fundamental physiological fact of the necessity of calcium for cardiac function, it is neglected or forgotten when mankind suffering from sinusitis, catarrh, etc., seeks relief. In both cases the cause is permitted to continue while futile attempts by drugs, operations, etc., are made to remove effects.
One man builds his house on sand, and because he fails to dig to a solid foundation, his house falls and he reaps futility and failure. One man builds on solidity and his house stands and he reaps success. In both cases for a time, if conditions are favourable and adversity is absent, the result appears the same, but in the strains and stresses of life, only work built on a sure foundation of irrefutable knowledge will survive when a man works for another’s safety, trusted and paid by his employer. But he who works with methods which have proven futile-which have no solid foundation, and allow the occupier to be swept away to oblivion-what is the builder? In the law of every civilization-he must gain the reward of his work by the law of compensation-oblivion.
