Mind

      Torpor, stupor; stoic indifference.

Loss of memory.

Inability to concentrate mental effort; must read a subject several times, or add a column of figures over and over before correct.

Depression of spirits; frequent sighing.

Great anxiety; restlessness.

Constant muttering delirium.

Sensorium

      Vertigo : more when stooping; with nausea and cold sweat.

Dizzy, face hot, cannot sit up; drowsy, yet very restless and anxious; later insensible, with muttering delirium; recognizes no one. Scarlatina.

Feeling as if an electric current were passing through the left side of head, or down to the extremities.

Apoplectic fulness of head.

Inner Head

      Headache, with nausea and giddiness.

Dull, heavy sensation in the forehead, with disinclination to think or act.

Thick, heavy feeling in the base and right side of the head.

Darting through temples and back of head, with confusion of ideas; severe pain through temples on waking.

Dull headache, burning in eyes, oppression of chest.

Pain in the occiput.

Outer Head

      Beating in the occipital arteries, Tender bruised sensation over the fronto-parietal suture.

Eyes

      Intolerance of light; tears from bright light, and from the open air.

Eyes suffused and congested, startled look when roused; pupils dilated and sluggish; photophobia.

Burning, smarting and aching in the eyes.

Rough, smarting and aching in the eyes.

Rough feeling in the left eye, as from dust.

Conjunctiva inflamed, towards the outer canthus.

Pus-like discharge, agglutinating the lids in the morning.

Dark blue circles around the eyes.

Ears

      Pain in the ear when swallowing.

Itching around the left ear at night; gets red when scratched.

Parotid gland tender and enlarged. Scarlatina.

Nose

      Loss of smell.

Coryza, with rawness inside about the nostrils; the whole nose and upper lip became covered with very thick gray-brown scabs.

Fluent nasal catarrh, with sneezing.

Copious, thin, ichorous, bloody discharge, without fetor.

Chronic catarrh, difficult breathing through the nose.

Dryness of the nose, secretion suppressed.

Itching and uneasy feeling around the nose.

Face

      Head and redness of the face; mahogany color.

Chronic, speckled, spotted face; a kind of acne.

Irregular red spots of capillary congestion, like with drunkards.

Swelling of the left side of face; puffed erysipelatous face.

Countenance indicating distress; great prostration.

Lower Face

      Small but deep ragged ulcer near the angle of the mouth; lips cracked.

Inflamed vesicles on the lower lip, chin bright red.

Teeth

      Covered with a brown slime or sordes.

Tearing in left upper or lower teeth, face and head; worse on lying down, must walk about; better from pressure and towards morning.

Tongue etc.

      Tongue : thickly covered with a whitish coat; brown in the middle; moist, coated white, tip and edges livid : dry, parched and cracked.

Taste : insipid, flat; feverish. Bronchial catarrh.

Water tastes brackish and flat.

Throat

      Fauces and tonsils inflamed, with spots of incipient ulceration.

Throat tender, sore on swallowing, or on admitting air.

Hawking of mucus, constant effort to raise hard lumps of whitish matter.

Throat livid, swollen; tonsils studded with many deep, angry- looking ulcers, with scanty, fetid discharge : neck tender and swollen. Scarlatina.

Throat swollen, dark red, almost purple. Scarlatina.

Thyroid gland tender, enlarged.

Desires Aversions

      Appetite : capricious; poor, yet eats as usual.

Hunger and sense of emptiness during the chill.

Thirst for cold drinks.

Eating and Drinking

      Food taken was speedily vomited.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Sudden, violent vomiting when sitting up.

Vomiting, with stupor.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, spasmodic abdominal pains.

Stomach

      Peculiar feeling of emptiness in stomach; pain.

Hypochondria

      Oppression, like a stricture, below hypochondria; a very debilitating sensation with nausea.

Abdomen

      Weak, burning, uneasy feeling in the bowels, as of approaching diarrhoea.

Tympanitis; slight rumbling in the bowels.

Stool etc.

      Dysentery, frequent painful stools, little fecal matter, much bloody mucus; very little fever.

Frequent watery stools expelled with great force.

Stools thin, watery, offensive, passing involuntarily with the urine.

Tapeworm.

Urine

      Scanty or suppressed; passed unconsciously; acid.

Male Sexual Organs Chancre-like sore on the prepuce.

Larynx

      Voice hoarse, failing Awoke in the morning, with almost entire loss of voice.

Croupy choking.

Oppression of bronchia with dull headache.

Breathing

      Hurried, irregular, heavy. Scarlatina.

Equable oppression, as though the chest were strapped; as if air cells stuck together.

Asthmatic oppression in large bronchi; wheezing.

Shortness of breath, with dyspnoea.

Cough

      Dry, hacking, constant; with oppression, burning, and pains in the chest; tight and wheezing, with scanty expectoration; pains through left lung; continual deep bronchial, without pain, worse from exercise or exertion.

Violent fits of coughing before retiring and on rising.

Coughs continually until she raises freely, then better.

Cough, with breathing somewhat oppressed; muco-purulent expectoration; free in the morning, sticky and scanty during the day.

Expectoration : at times mixed with blood, at times of blood alone; bitter, yellow, more mornings.

Lungs

      Excessive soreness and tenderness of lungs; feeling as if the air-cells were stuck together; tired feeling in the lungs.

Stitching and aching in the chest, under clavicle.

Burning in the right, aching in the left lung.

Sensation of fulness and smothering before expectoration.

Heart Pulse

      Dull pain and contracted feeling in region of base of heart and through centre of left lung.

Pulse rapid and small; weak, sometimes scarcely perceptible, very frequent and irregular. Scarlatina.

Neck and Back

      Itching around her neck.

Thickened, swollen feeling of the muscles of neck.

Neck tender and very much swollen.

Constant aching between the shoulders.

Glands of the neck sore, with pain under the left scapula.

Constant sharp pain through the small of back and hips.

Upper Limbs

      Large water blister on the end of the thumb, with smaller ones at the side of the finger nails.

Tingling in fingers and left arm on awaking.

Lower Limbs

      Numbness of left leg, with tingling, pricking pain in the foot and toes.

Severe pain in left foot, a tension while walking.

Limbs in General

      Feeling of uneasiness and aching; restlessness.

Heaviness of the limbs.

Limbs feel as though they were asleep.

Nerves

      Great debility, easily exhausted.

Electric thrill, starting from the brain, to the extremities.

Jerking cramps of the limbs during sleep.

Low, adynamic forms of disease, sudden and extreme prostration, torpor, vomiting, pulse small and rapid, purplish skin.

Sleep

      Very drowsy, restless, soon passes into insensibility.

Sleep disturbed, unrefreshing. Heavy sleep through the night.

Restless at night, talking and moaning in sleep, night-sweat, frequent waking.

Sleeps best on the right side. Bronchial affections.

Chill Fever Sweat

      Chill, with hunger and sense of general emptiness.

Miliary eruption before the chill.

Chills, followed by flushes of heat, with severe pain in the head and soreness of the lungs.

Skin either very hot or cool to the touch.

Dry, hot skin, most in the morning, until noon.

Cold sweat stood out upon the skin. Verified in cholera.

Skin

      Eruption of miliary rash, in patches, with efflorescence between the points of rash of a dark, almost livid color; most on forehead and face.

Skin cold and dry, of livid color; after pressing with the finger the color returns very slowly.

Itching around left ear, back, face and neck at night; felt as if she would go crazy.

Large maculae, and bullae, filled with a claret colored serum.

Petechiae.

Malignant scarlatina.

Stages and States

      The odor of the flowers affect the asthmatic; also women and children more than men; old people least of all.

Nervous sensitive persons.

Bilious temperament, stout and robust.

Antidotes to Ailanth. : Aloe s., for the dull headache; Rhus tox. for the headache and erysipelatous face; Nux vomica for the general effects.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
