Mind

      Idle through the afternoon, does not really get at work; changes from one work to another, from one room to another without keeping to any object.

Dread of downward motion.

Great anxiety and sleepiness; anxiety increased until 11 P.M. Fretful, ill-humored, indolent and discontented, before the easy stool, in the afternoon; after it, lively, contented, and looking cheerfully into the future.

Easily startled by unusual sounds.

Sensorium

      First, heaviness of head: later, light, clear head.

Vertigo and fulness in head on ascending a mountain or stairs.

Feels as if pushed from right to left and somewhat forward.

Inner Head

      Aching in whole head, with nausea, inclination to vomit and trembling in the whole body, at 10 A.M.

Pressive headache in the forehead, Throbbing headache in both temples, or in occiput.

Tearing; also stitches in the vertex.

Outer Head

      Hot head, of infants, with heat of mouth and palms.

Hair becomes entangled at tips and sticks together, cannot be separated; if these bunches are cut off they form again.

Sensitiveness of external head to cold, change of weather.

Eyes

      Obscuration of left eye, evening.

Flickering before eyes in morning, when writing, so that he does not see distinctly; there seem to be bright moving waves, now from right in left, again from above downwards.

Several stitches in succession in left eye.

Inflammation of left eye at inner canthus, with nightly agglutination.

Inflammation of right eye at external canthus, with irregularity of the lashes; nightly agglutination.

The lashes turn inward toward the eye and inflame it. especially at outer canthus, where the margins of the lids are very sore.

Ears

      Very sensitive to the slightest noise, as rumbling of paper, fall of a door-latch, etc.

Difficult hearing, more in the left ear.

Ringing, piping, crackling, drumming, or roaring in ears, more in left. Stitches in left ear.

Discharge of pus from both ears.

Inflamed and hot swelling of both ears.

Nose

      Bleeding from the nose morning.

Sneezing causes severe stitch in right side of chest.

Fluent coryza, with much crawling in the nose.

Discharge of much greenish, thick mucus from the nose.

Dry crusts in the nose, re-form if removed.

Boil in the forepart of the left nostril, toward the tip, with sore pain and swelling of tip of nose.

Red shining swelling of the nose, with throbbing and tensive sensation.

Face

      Anxious face during downward motion.

Sickly, pale, earthy color of the face.

Swelling, heat and redness of face, with tearing pain in the malar bone.

Sensation on right side of face. by the mouth as if cobwebs laid there.

Lower Face

      Red inflamed swelling, as large as a pea, on the lower lip, with burning soreness when touched.

Crawling like insects, on the lips.

Teeth

      Dull griping in a hollow tooth in wet weather.

Inflamed large swelling on the outer side of gum which pains severely (gum boil), with dull pain in a hollow tooth; swelling of cheek and whole left side of face, as far as below eye, where there is formed a watery blister.

Tongue etc.

      Taste: flat and insipid; bitter; food and even saliva taste bitter.

Food has no taste.

Aphthae on the tongue.

Red blisters on the tongue, as if the surface were eroded; they pain from every motion of tongue, or if anything salt, sour or spiced touches them.

Inner Mouth

      Aphthae: in the mouth; on inner surface of cheek, bleeding easily; with great heat and dryness of mouth.

The mucous membrane of forepart of palate is shriveled, as if burnt, pains especially when chewing.

Mouth very hot.

Throat

      Palate wrinkled; child cries frequently, when nursing.

Roughness and burning in throat.

Tough, whitish mucus in the throat, which is loosened only after great exertion.

Desires Aversions

      Longing for sour drinks.

No desire for his smoking tobacco.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating apples with mutton, fulness in stomach with peevishness and ill-humor, also fulness in head.

After every meal flatulent distention.

After smoking tobacco sensation as if diarrhoea would set in.

After eating pears, especially morning or forenoon, pressure in pit of stomach, which disappears on walking.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Hiccough after eating (also of infants). Nausea: in morning; immediately after waking, with inclination to vomit; after drinking water, mucus and bitter vomit.

Vomiting food and mucus.

Stomach

      Pain in region of stomach after heavy lifting; pain extends to the small of back where it is of a stitching character; so severe that during the night she cannot turn without pain; better in the morning.

Hypochondria

      Pressure in left hypochondrium.

Cutting in left hypochondrium on walking rapidly, as if a hard, sharp, movable piece was there with sensation in abdomen as if only hard pieces in it, and these were in motion.

Pressure in right hypochondrium.

Cutting in right hypochondrium, extending downwards across bowels, followed by diarrhoea, evacuation sudden.

Abdomen

      Flatulent distention after every meal.

Pain in abdomen, as if diarrhoea would set in.

Pinching in abdomen with diarrhoea.

Stitching and pressing pain in groin.

Belly soft, flabby and sunken.

Stool etc.

      Stools : frequent, soft, light yellow, slimy with faintness and weariness; region or brown diarrhoeic; painless, at first frothy, thin and brown, later cadaverous-smelling, containing bits of yellow feces; colorless or slimy; green, preceded by crying (infant).

Urine

      Severe, urgent desire to urinate.

At night must rise several times to urinate.

Desire to urinate, without being able to pass a drop.

The infant urinates every ten or twelve minutes, and frequently cries and screams before the passage.

Hot urine.

Pungent smell of the urine.

Smarting in the urethra after urinating.

Male Sexual Organs

      Indifference to coition.

Female Sexual Organs

      Menses too early, too profuse, and attended with colic and nausea.

Leucorrhoea like the white of egg, with sensation as if warm water were falling down; leucorrhoea and sterility; acrid leucorrhoea midway between menstrual periods.

Pregnancy

      Labor-pains accompanied by violent and frequent eructations.

Milk is too thick and tastes badly; often curdles soon after it has been drawn.

Constrictive pains in left mamma when child nurses the right one.

Griping and sometimes stitches in left mamma, and when the child has nursed she is obliged to compress the breast with the hand, because it aches on account of being empty.

Larynx

      Tearing in larynx extending to chest, exciting cough.

Breathing

      Respiration difficult.

Obliged, every few minutes, to take a quick, deep breath, which is every time followed by a stitch in right side of chest, with a subdued painful sigh and slow exhalation.

Shortness of breath after ascending stairs, so that he cannot speak a word; later, when he speaks, has stitch in right side of chest.

Chest

      Hacking and violent cough, with slight expectoration from the chest, of moldy taste and smell.

Musty expectoration, with pain through the chest to back.

Dry, cachectic cough, especially in morning when rising and evening when lying down; with stitching pain in right chest and right flank, relieved by pressure; washing the chest with cold water affords the most relief; after drinking wine the pains aggravated.

Cough with expectoration of white mucus streaked with blood.

Lungs

      Tightness in the chest.

Stitches in chest when yawning, coughing or breathing deeply.

Stitches in right side of the chest in the region of the nipple, with every paroxysm of cough.

Heart Pulse

      Circulation irregular, face bluish, especially around the mouth, nose and eyes with blue look of finger-ends and feet; with attacks, during which the child became prostrate and as if suffocating.

Sensation as if the heart were on the right side and were being squeezed.

Pulse somewhat accelerated.

Outer Chest

      Stitches between the ribs of the right side; cannot lie upon that side on account of the pain, with sensitive drawing and obstruction of breathing, has to catch for breath; if during sleep, he lies on the painful side, the pains awake him immediately.

Neck Back

      Rheumatic drawing pains in the nape of the neck, extending to the left shoulder and then into the scapula; evening, when walking in the open air.

Pain in the back; when walking; as from pressure, when sitting, or stooping.

Upper Limbs

      Drawing and tearing pain in and between the shoulders, so that he cannot stoop.

Tearing and breaking sensation in right wrist.

Burning, heat and redness of the fingers during slight cold, as if frost-bitten.

Throbbing pain in the tip of thumb, day and night, frequently waking from sleep, at night.

Lower Limbs

      Erysipelatous inflammation and swelling on the left leg and foot, after violent dancing, with tearing, tension and burning in it; increased burning pain when touched; on pressure redness disappears for a moment.

Pain in the hill as if sore from walking.

Stitches in sole.

Burning, heat and redness of the toes during slight cold, as if frost-bitten.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
