      HERING.

Mind

      Forgetfulness, of what he had done a short time ago.

Writes wrong words, or same words twice.

Difficulty in performing intellectual operation.

Wishes to be at home, and when at home, to go out; goes from place to place.

Involuntary sighing.

Anxiousness. Anxiety: in pit of stomach; of children.

Peevish and fretful children.

Inclined to indignation and anger.

Dulness with every headache; worse from bodily exertion; better from cold washing; from mental occupation.

Feel complaints more when thinking about them.

Ailments: from grief; from disappointed love.

Sensorium

      Staggering when rising from a seat.

Vertigo: on motion; when walking in open air; worse in windy weather; with costiveness: of old people.

Fulness and pressure, or dulness of head, worse from pressure of the hat.

Inner Head

      Pressure from the eyes and toward them, Headache over the forehead, with tearing pain in the arms and hands, most in wrist and right middle finger.

Headache on vertex and behind the ears, with a drawing in the muscles of the neck, to the nape and occiput.

Aching, drawing pains around lateral protuberances of occiput.

Headache of school girls, with diarrhoea.

Headache worse from change of weather, extending from the forehead to nose; or from the temples to jaw, with some rheumatic feeling from the clavicles to wrists.

Outer Head

      Sore pain; drawing, rending, tearing in the skull bones worse along the sutures.

Skull soft and thin; crackling noise like paper when pressed, mostly in the occiput.

Delayed closure, or re-opening of fontanelles.

Crawling over the top of head, as if ice were lying over the occiput; head hot; smarting of roots of the hair.

Itching black scurfs; poor crop of hair, or losing the hair.

Ulcers on the top of the head.

Cannot hold the head up; moves it from place to place; head totters.

Eyes

      Light, particularly candle or gas-light, hurts the eyes.

Eyeballs pain, as if beaten.

Cool feeling behind the eyes.

Squinting; distortion of eyeballs.

Hot feeling in lids.

Ears

      Difficult hearing.

Singing and other noises most in the right ear.

Cold feeling or coldness of the ears.

Aching, pressing, tearing or rending in and around the ears, most behind, or below.

Inner and outer ear swollen, red, sore, itching; hot.

Excoriating discharge from the ears.

Aching sore pain in the region of parotid gland.

Nose

      Sneezing, and soreness on the edges of alae, fluent coryza, forenoon.

Nosebleed; afternoon.

Coryza: fluent in a cold room: stopped in warm air and out- doors.

Point of nose icy-cold.

Nose swollen: nostrils sore.

Large pedunculated nasal polypi.

Face

      Pain in face, particularly in upper maxilla, from right to left; extends from other parts, to the face, or vice versa.

Heat in the face.

Face: pale; sallow; yellowish; earthy; full of pimples.

Cold sweat on the face; body cold.

Lower Face

      Swollen upper lip; painful, hard and burning.

Teeth

      Retarded dentition, with cold tumors and emaciation.

Hollow teeth, sensitive to air.

Pain in the canines.

Teeth sensitive to chewing.

Tongue etc.

      Disgusting taste, on awaking, worse when hawking.

Bitter taste: in the morning, with headache; particularly of wheat bread.

Tongue swollen, numb, stiff, with pimples on it.

Tip of tongue sore, burning, little blisters on it.

Mouth

      Sore spot inside of the right cheek.

Throat

      Sore aching in throat, worse when swallowing.

Sore throat, with tickling cough in the evening, worse after going to bed.

Desire Aversions

      Hunger at 4 P.M.

Infants want to nurse all the time.

Much thirst, with dry mouth and tongue, during and after part of the day.

Eating and Drinking

      At every attempt to eat, belly-ache., After meals, sore after dinner, headache or drowsiness, weariness, itching; or heart-burn, and other gastric symptoms.

After drinking cold water, cutting in the belly.

Eating ice-cream in evening, causes colic.

Juicy fruit, or cider, causes diarrhoea.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Sour belching, and gulping up.

After belching burning in the epigastrium.

Nausea, rising from the pit of stomach when moving; better at rest: followed by headache and lassitude.

Nausea: from smoking; after coffee.

Vomiturition from hawk phlegm.

Children vomit, often and easy.

Stomach

      Indescribable uneasiness in region of stomach.

Sharp cutting, or cramp-like pain, in stomach, with headache.

Pressure in the stomach; less during rest.

Stomach feels expanded.

Burning at the stomach and rising of water into mouth.

Empty, sinking sensation at the epigastrium Stomach symptoms worse by taking even the smallest quantity of food.

Hypochondria

      Throbbing in the right hypochondrium lessened after belching or passing wind.

Stitches or shooting in region of liver, wen taking a deep breath.

Hardness, soreness and pressure in the right side.

Pressure and soreness in the left side.

Stitch in the left side while breathing.

Abdomen

      Empty, sinking sensation, around the navel in the whole belly.

Motion in belly, like something alive.

Cutting, pinching, sharp colic, followed by diarrhoea.

Burning : in region of navel; in the whole abdomen, rising up into the chest, or into the throat.

Aching soreness, and pain around navel, lessens after passing fetid flatus.

Oozing of bloody fluid from navel of infants.

Aching soreness, cutting, drawing in left groin, later in right.

Abdominal wall: tingling, numb; quivering or aching.

Stool etc.

      Stitches in the rectum toward the anus or shooting in the anus.

Offensive flatus.

Diarrhoea, during dentition, with much flatus.

Stools: green and loose, sometimes slimy, with children; soft, passed with difficulty, accompanying the headache of school girls.

Pus discharged with the stools, which are extremely offensive.

Hard stool, with depression of mind, causing headache with old people.

Itching in the anus; most in the evening.

Protruding piles aching itching and sore; oozing of a yellow fluid.

Small furuncle near anus, to the right, with much pain; cannot sit, has to stand, or lie on left side; discharges blood or pus and remains a painless fistula.

Fistula in ano, alternating with chest symptoms.

Urine

      Violent pain in the region of the kidneys, when lifting and when blowing the nose.

Violent pain in the bladder and all neighboring parts.

Shooting in the mouth of the bladder.

Frequent urging to urinate.

Cutting pains in the urethra.

Dark urine.

Large increase of urine with sensation of weakness.

Male Sexual Organs

      Erection, while riding in a carriage, without sexual desire.

Shooting through the perineum into the penis.

Swelling of the testicles.

Itching of scrotum, with sweating, soreness and pimples.

Scrotum sore, oozing a fluid.

Female Sexual Organs

      Voluptuous feeling as if all the female parts were filling up with blood; she feels the pulse in all the parts, with increased sexual desire.

Aching in the uterus.

Drawing pain from right to left over the pubes, with discharge of some blood followed by earache, first left, then right.

Menses: too early blood bright, with girls; too late, blood dark, or first bright, then dark, with women.

Weakness and distress in the region of the uterus, worse during passage of stool and urine.

Leucorrhoea like the white of egg, day and night.

Throbbing, stinging, tickling, sore aching, or pressing in the genitals, drawing upwards in the symphysis, downwards in the thighs.

Pregnancy

      Weakness in all the limbs during pregnancy.

Child refuses the mother’s breast, the milk tastes saltish.

Milk; acid; watery, thin, neutral.

Mammae sore to the touch. Pains and burning in the mammae.

Nipple aching, sore.

Larynx

      Hoarseness and cough, day and night.

Must hawk or hem to clear the voice.

Burning at back of tongue, followed by burning larynx.

Breathing

      Involuntary sighing.

Breathing more frequent, short and difficult.

Child gets a suffocative attack when lifted up from cradle.

Cough

      Tubercular cough, with soreness and dryness in the throat.

Cough: With yellow expectoration, more in the morning; with fever, dryness and thirst; from A.M. to P.M.; during difficult dentition; cavities containing pus.

With the cough, stitches in the chest, heat on lower part of chest and upper arm.

Lungs

      Aching in the chest, with soreness to touch.

Sharp pain about sixth rib, right side; later on the left about fourth and fifth ribs, coming and going; takes the breath; worse with deep breath, during the day.

Contraction of chest and difficult breathing, evening till 1 p.m.; better lying down, worse when getting up.

Heart Pulse

      Palpitation with anxiety, followed by trembling weakness, particularly of the calves.

Feels the beating of the pulse not frequent but quick; while sitting, feels it in the nape of neck of left chest.

Outer Chest

      Tearing, pressing and shooting in sternum.

Sore pain on the sternum.

Clavicle sore; first left, then right.

Ulcer over the sternum or clavicle.

Neck Back

      Rheumatic pain and stiffness of the neck, with dulness of the head; from slight draught of air.

Cramp-like pain in neck, first one then the other side Pains and aches between, and mostly below, the scapulae.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
