Mind

      Feels constantly as if she had forgotten something.

Fixed, immovable thoughts.

Fear of evil, with overcarefulness.

Shrinking and fear when anyone comes near, particularly the physician (this is not in gout).

Mind very sensitive during digestions, felt like crying.

Melancholy mood, low-spirited.

Irritability and sensitiveness. Excessive excitability.

Must keep in motion day and night, brain felt as if it were stirred up, felt as if going crazy.

Sensorium

      Vertigo: only on left side; with throbbing in head and all over body, tremor at heart, fainting; worse immediately after rising from a seat or bed; or by sitting or lying down after slight exercise.

Inner Head

      Headache; left side and top, sometimes paralytic feeling of the arms.

Headache, as if a tape or band were tightly drawn around head.

Headache worse: in warm air; when riding a long time in a carriage; from walking fast.

Pressure on a small spot above root of nose, Throbbing in the head, at every motion.

Eyes

      Optical illusions in bright colors.

Obscuration of sight.

Like a veil before the eyes.

Protrusion of the balls.

Smarting in the eyes.

Constant tearing pain around right eye; passing backwards from inner canthus to articulation of jaw.

Trembling of the lids.

Dilation of the pupil, with constant motion of the balls.

White of the eye dirty yellow.

OEdematous swelling of the lids.

Ears

      Sensitiveness to noise.

Hearing first sensitive, then dull.

Buzzing in the ears.

Adhesions in the middle ear.

Nose

      Sensation as if the alae were spread wide open and nose dry; loss of smell; in the evening, sneezing.

Dry coryza, becoming fluent in the open air.

Chronic fetid discharge from nose; nose painful and swollen.

Face

      Face: pale, yellow, or soon changing to brown; sallow, distressed; pale, alternating with red.

Convulsive twitchings of the facial muscles.

Coldness of the face in very fleshy children.

Teeth

      Toothache, gums swollen and bleeding.

Little blisters form on the gums.

Gums puffed, red, inflammed, painful to touch, and bleed easily.

Tongue etc.

      Taste: salty; sourish; sweetish, on tip of tongue.

Tongue: dry; brown and dry; thickly coated.

Mouth

      Mouth filled with mucus on awaking in the morning, with putrid taste, not relieved by washing mouth with water.

Copious, sweet saliva.

Ptyalism; also, that after mercury. Aphthae in the mouth.

Ulcers in the mouth, gums red swollen, receding from the teeth, bleeding slightly, and with small ash-colored painful ulcers; profuse fetid ptyalism.

Thick, brown, croup-like exudation in mouth and fauces.

Throat

      Swelling and elongation of the uvula.

Inflammation of the throat, with burning pain.

Sensation of constriction (fulness or pressure) in the larynx, with impeded deglutition.

Ulcers in the throat, with swelling of the gland of neck.

Inflammation and ulceration of the oesophagus.

Desires Aversions

      Hunger, suffering from it, must eat every few hours; gets anxious and worried if he does not eat.

Eats freely, yet loses flesh all the time.

Alternate canine hunger and want of appetite.

Eating and Drinking

      Fasting causes pain in the chest.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Hiccough.

Heart-burn, after heavy food.

Empty eructations from morning till evening.

Sour eructations, with burning there from.

Qualmishness, nausea, with spasmodic pain in stomach.

Violent vomiting renewed by eating.

Vomiting: of bile, with violent colic; of milk.

Stomach

      Spasmodic pains in stomach, renewed by eating.

Pulsations in the pit of stomach.

Tenderness of the epigastrium.

Stitches in stomach, relaxed feeling must loosen clothing; milk disagrees; intense thirst.

Hypochondria

      Region of liver sore to pressure.

Swelling of the spleen, after intermittent fever; vague pains down to left iliac region.

Abdomen

      Swelling and distention of the abdomen.

Incarceration of flatulence in left side of abdomen.

Violent throbbing of the aorta abdominalis.

Swelling of the inguinal glands.

Stool etc.

      Stools; of watery, foaming, whitish mucus, always in the morning; copious, papescent; dysenteric, mucous, without feces; whey -like; fatty.

Constipation alternating with diarrhoea.

Constipation, with ineffectual urging, better after drinking milk.

Stools hard, knotty, dark colored.

Urine

      Incontinence of urine in the aged.

Urine: dark, thick, ammoniacal; dark, yellowish-green; acrid; milky; with a variegated cuticle on its surface.

Male Sexual Organs

      Bearing down, or twisting, in the seminal cord.

Swelling and induration of testicles, and of prostrate gland.

Painless swelling of the testicles, with offensive sweat.

Female Sexual Organs

      Menses: sometimes too early, at others too late; premature, violent and copious.

Uterine hemorrhage, renewed after every stool.

Metrorrhagia, with acute pain in mammae; or, mammae dwindle away and become flabby.

Induration and swelling of the uterus and ovaries.

Dropsical affections of the ovaries, with pressing down toward the genitals.

Dull, pressing, wedge-like pains, from right ovary toward the uterus.

Leucorrhoea : acrid, corroding the limbs; worse at time of menses.

Bluish-red nodosities, size of a hazel-nut, in the skin of both mammae; dry, black points at the tips.

Pregnancy

      Iodum should not be given during lying-in, except in high potencies.

Larynx

      Hoarseness, lasts all day, phlegm in small quantities and tough, constant hemming and hawking.

Tightness and constriction about the larynx, with soreness and hoarseness.

OEdema glottidis (may be sued by inhalation) Membranous croup, with wheezing and sawing respiration, dry, barking cough, especially children with dark eyes and dark hair; child grasps the throat with the hand, raises large, tough flakes (not stringy exudation); fever.

Breathing

      Shortness of breath, palpitation and feeling of weakness on going up stairs.

Cough

      Dry morning cough, from tickling in the larynx.

Dry cough, with stitches and burning in the chest.

Cough, with expectoration of large quantities of mucus, frequently blood-streaked.

Expectoration : salty; sourish; grey or white.

Lungs

      Sensation of weakness in the chest.

Sharp, quick, piercing pains.

Tendency to bronchial and pulmonary congestion and hemorrhage.

Hepatization, worse upper part of right lung; high fever, restlessness, thirst apathy. Rapid hepatization; tightness across the chest.

Heart Pulse

      Violent palpitation, worse from the least exertion.

Sensation as if the heart were squeezed together.

Heart acts tumultuously, with hard, full pulse; or, pulse, small, weak. Constant, heavy, oppressive pain, in region of the heart.

Pulse : large, hard and accelerated, with orgasm of blood and beating in the blood-vessels; rapid, but weak and thread-like; accelerated, by every slight exertion.

Neck Back

      Goitre, with marked hardness.

Swelling and induration of the cervical glands.

Spinal complaints, with gressus vaccinus.

Upper Limbs

      Weariness of the arms, as if paralyzed, in the morning, in bed.

Painful weakness in the extensors.

Pains in the left elbow.

Coldness of the hands and feet.

Fingers “go to sleep.”.

Lower Limbs

      Hot, bright red swelling of the knee, with inflammation, pricking and burning; aggravated by touch or pressure.

Violent itching nettle-rash, particularly around the knee; on outer side of left knee especially.

OEdematous swelling of the feet.

Acrid, corrosive sweat of the foot.

Painful corns.

Limbs in General

      Subsultus tendinum of hands and feet.

Chronic arthritic affections, with violent nightly pains in the joints, no swelling.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
