Mind

      Forgetful and absent-minded.

She cannot get rid of an idea once fixed in her head.

Visions by day of fancied things.

Feels like crying all the time, but crying makes her worse.

Sadness, with aversion to men and disinclination to talk. Continued restlessness and anxiety.

Cannot muster sufficient courage to do anything.

Sullen, answers unwillingly and shortly.

Thinking makes her feel wretched.

From giving directions in her domestic affairs, great palpitation of the heart, and anxiety.

Sensorium

      Vertigo; when reading, with loss of thought; worse walking in open air or raising head.

Inner Head

      Headache every morning, over one or the other eye, mostly left, gradually extending over whole forehead, increasing and decreasing gradually; often with vomiting.

Migraine, cerebral in origin, rather than gastric; atrocious pains with congestion, severe, painful constriction in forehead and temples; coldness of trunk and limbs; vomiting followed by marked relief.

Painful jerks through left temple, forehead and cerebellum, leaving a dull pressure; worse during rest, better from motion.

Throbbing headache in temples.

Heaviness in head, during rest and motion, evenings.

Outer Head

      Burning in forehead, with nausea, better in the open air.

Eyes

      Weak, lusterless eyes.

Pupils contracted.

Pustular swelling at inner canthus of left eye, like a lachrymal fistula.

Pressive pain in inner canthus, as from a stye.

Biting in eyes, as from rubbing with a woolen cloth.

Agglutination of lids at night.

Ears

      Ringing in left ear.

Shrieking noise in ear when blowing the nose.

Ulceration of ear-ring hole.

Nose

      Oversensitive to smell.

Stuffed feeling and heaviness, high up in nostrils.

Dry coryza on one side, with soreness, swelling and redness of the nostril.

Face

      Flushes of heat in face from any movement, better in open air; one cheek hot and red.

Face pale, sunken eyes, mind dull.

Prosopalgia: pains increase and decrease gradually; after suppressed chills by quinine.

Teeth

      Feel loose, elongated, with painful jerking shortly after eating.

Tongue etc.

      Taste : sour; sweet; offensive; everything bitter but water.

Difficult, weak speech, occasioned by weakness.

Tongue : red; with yellow mucous coating.

Mouth

      Fetid smell from mouth.

Throat

      Cutting in throats as from knives, when swallowing.

Hawks mucus, with soreness in throat; voice then becomes clearer and higher for singing.

Desires Aversions

      Hunger, except in evening; cannot eat enough.

Appetite irregular, with hypochondriasis.

Aversion to beer; it tastes flat or bitter.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating (jerking in teeth):; (bitter eructations) :; (empty feeling in abdomen: : Warm drinks :.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations bitter after eating.

Nausea after eating, followed by vomiting of bile; or undigested food.

Vomiting: of blood; of bile and mucus on awaking in morning : of water when smelling cooking; cannot bear smell of cooking.

Stomach

      Haematemesis, worse when lying, better from pressure on stomach: slight touch causes a feeling of subcutaneous ulceration.

Cardialgia, pains gradually come and go, extend to navel, and are better from hard pressure; sickly expression.

Uneasy, knows not what to do with himself; pains relieved by walking, yet so weak he must soon rest.

Sinking, gone: feeling in epigastrium.

Hypochondria

      Occasionally through day, great epigastric weakness and hunger, but cannot eat.

Burning in hepatic region; stinging.

Boring stitches in left hypochondrium.

Hysteric spasms in region of diaphragm.

Abdomen

      Empty feeling after eating.

Cutting about navel, with bitter eructations, hunger and diarrhoea; better from hard pressure.

Hernia, better from pressure on abdomen.

Abdomen sore as from subcutaneous ulceration.

Stool etc.

      Stools; green, curdy, with much colic; with bitter eructations; hard, dry, knotty or insufficient, with renewed desire afterwards.

Rectum inactive; much urging even with soft stool.

Passes worms; colic; sickly face.

Urine

      Profuse and pale, then scanty, brown and sometimes white, like milk.

After urination continued urging.

Deficient urging, as from insensibility of bladder, which feels dull, yet the secretion is scanty.

Male Sexual Organs

      Voluptuous feeling in genitals, ending in an emission.

Emissions without dreams.

Female Sexual Organs

      Menses too early and too profuse; preceded by melancholy; pain in malar bones, which continues during menses.

Bearing down in uterine region; prolapsus uteri.

Displacement of vagina; worse during stool; feel so weak she must drop down suddenly, but can get up quite readily.

Leucorrhoea: with great debility; of yellow. white or transparent mucus.

Pregnancy

      Spasmodic labor-pains; they exhaust her, she is out of breath.

Child refuses the mother’s milk.

Larynx

      Voice deep, hoarse; hollow, higher, after hawking up mucus.

Roughness and hoarseness, the latter momentarily better by coughing.

Laryngeal phthisis, with constant, short, irritating, hacking cough and aphonia; empty feeling in chest.

Breathing

      Attacks of asthma, preceded by symptoms of ordinary cold, to 5 A.M., attacks increase and decrease gradually.

Disposition to take a deep breath; causing a feeling of lightness.

Evening dyspnoea; must loosen the clothing.

Crowing, snorting respiration.

Oppressed breathing, from every movement, when lying down and in the evenings.

Cough

      Dry, evening in bed; concussive, in paroxysms of three coughs; caused by mucus in chest and by stitches and dryness in trachea; sputa like the white of an egg or yellow-green pus, sweetish, putrid, sour or saltish; during the day, with copious, green, salty sputa; most profuse in morning.

Accumulation of much mucus in trachea, easily thrown off by coughing; afterward soreness or stitches in chest.

Cough caused by talking, singing, laughing, lying on (right) side and from drinking anything warm.

Lungs

      Tension across upper part of chest with emptiness in lower.

Chest so weak he cannot talk; empty feeling in chest.

Haemoptysis with tendency to copious expectoration.

Phthisis mucosa with the characteristic cough, weakness and sputa; profuse sweats.

Stitches in left side of when breathing or lying on that side; knife-like below left axilla.

Great sore feeling in chest.

Heart Pulse

      Pulse frequent and small.

Neck Back

      Weakness of nape of neck.

Stitches in back; in small of back and into limbs.

Upper Limbs

      Jerking in muscles of arm when resting it; fingers jerk when holding the pen.

Weakness and heaviness of arms, especially the right; worse from motion.

Swelling of the hands, evening.

Painful hung-nails.

Lower Limbs

      Weakness and heaviness especially of thigh and knee-joint, must sit down.

Swelling of ankles, evenings.

Limbs in General

      Paralytic heaviness of limbs; worse using the arm or walking, particularly descending.

Insupportable restlessness of all the limbs.

Nerves

      Feels as if she would faint.

Paralysis mostly left-sided; feeling of a load in affected arm and corresponding side of chest; from emotions, spasms, or onanism.

Faint sensation after going down stairs, can go up well enough.

Trembling worse from slow exercise.

Hysterical spasms, with pain in abdomen and in diaphragm.

Epilepsy : with tossing of limbs, clenching thumbs, opisthotonos; unconsciousness; with sexual complications; during dentition with symptoms of worms.

Sleep

      Sleepy during day; goes to sleep late at night.

Restless, the child moans during sleep or supplicates in a timid manner.

So weak on awaking, it puts her out of breath to dress.

Temperature and Weather

Chill Fever Sweat

      Chill : 10 A.M., finger-tips numb, or in the evening over the back; only on head, with thirst; slight, but with chattering teeth, as from convulsion of masseter muscles.

Heat from 4 to 5 P.M., with sweat.

Burning heat in limbs, mostly in hands, every evening.

Anxious heat, as if sweat would break out.

Thirst after the heat.

Sweat : smells mouldy, musty; debilitating, night and morning, most profuse on neck; debilitating, from least movement.

Hectic fever.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
