      Jamestown-wood. Hahnemann. Solanaceae.

Mind

      Dulness of sense; also before a rash.

Coma, spasms; later, snoring, unconscious, jaw hangs, hands and feet twitch, eyes roll; pupils dilated; automatic grasping of hands towards nose, ears. etc.; difficult to swallow liquids.

Unconscious, stupid.

Awakens terrified, knows no one, screams with fright, clings to those near (child).

Feels stupid, with indifference to everybody and everything.

Memory weak; loses thoughts before she can give them utterance; weeps about her weak mind also after sunstroke.

Hallucinations, which terrify the patient sees ghosts, hears voices back of his ears sees strangers or imagines animals are jumping sideways out of ground, or running at him.

Strange, absurd ideas; thinks herself tall, double, or lying crosswise; one-half of body cut off, etc.

Says he converses with spirits; prays fervently; sermonizes. Ecstatic.

Delirium with grand ideas; general paralysis.

Delirium; shy, hides himself; tries to escape; conscious of her condition; full of fear; talks incessantly, absurdly, laughs, claps her hands over head, wide-open eyes; great sexual excitement, during night.

Lies on the back, knees and thighs flexed, hands, joined; delirium alternating with tetanic convulsions.

Mania : for light and company; cannot bear to be alone; runs about; rage; proud, haughty; merry, exaltation.

Hydrophobia; water, a mirror or anything bright excites convulsions; screams; bites; mouth dry; pupils large; unconscious. (Best drug, change dose till cure certain.) Talks in a foreign tongue. Typhus.

Loquacious; talks all the time, sings, makes verses.

Melancholic, fears death; weeps all the time.

Pangs of conscience; thinks he is not honest.

Alternate exaltation and melancholy.

Alternation of delirium and somnolence.

On being reprimanded, pupils dilate immediately (child).

After fright : St. Vitus dance; epilepsy; mania; melancholia.

Sensorium

      Vertigo : cannot walk in dark, or with eyes closed; staggering, obscuration of vision, red face; reeling as if drunk.

Inner Head

      Tormenting sensation of heat in whole head, mostly vertex, with great dullness; after sunstroke.

Pressure on forehead when rising, could only half open eyes, could not look up.

Headache congestive, morning; worse toward noon, gradually decreasing, toward evening; pains terrible, fears going mad, would run or press head against a wall.

Pulsating in vertex; fainting.

Heat, pulsating about vertex, attacks of fainting. loss of sight and hearing, face bloated, turgid; convulsive motions of head, frequently raising head from pillow, or bending it backward; better lying still.

Sensation of lightness of head.

Pain in head; nausea, delirium, eyes wild, starting, inflamed; frenzy, convulsive spasms and twitchings of nerves, hands and feet become cold, pulse sinking. Meningitis.

Headache, with loss of sight and hearing.

Rheumatic headache, with dullness; difficult thinking; worse on vertex or forehead; worse evening and night.

Tearing in neck and over head. shunning light; better from warmth; worse from cold; worse on getting up in morning.

Outer Head

      Jerks head up form pillow.

Boring head into pillow.

Head bent backward.

Moves head, thrusts it in all directions : in spasms, mostly to the right.

Supports head with hands while bending or rising; after sunstroke.

Eyes

      Light dazzles; shuns light; convulsions from bright or brilliant objects.

Hemeralopia.

Illusions in colors, often dark, less often blue and red.

Double vision, obliquely.

Vision cloudy, as through a veil.

Total blindness. Typhus.

Pupils dilated; sometimes immovable and insensible to light.

Eyes : wide open, staring; brilliant; wild and red; protrude; vacillate; vessels injected; contorted; rolling; squinting; half open, in sleep; inflamed.

Ears

      Very sensitive to noises; least noise startles him.

Hardness of hearing.

Sensation as of wind rushing out of ear.

Otalgia, left side, violent pains, remitting somewhat at night, better when covering head warmly.

Nose

      Nose feels stopped, yet he breathes freely.

Nasal discharge yellow, bad smelling.

Nosebleed: dark, in lumps; with whooping-cough.

Face

      Red, bloated, hot: red, eyes wild; hot and red, with cold hands and feet; circumscribed redness of cheek; pale Forehead wrinkled, frowning often in brain diseases.

Thinks face elongated. Hysteria.

One-sided erysipelas, with meningitis; spasmodic symptoms alternately with paralytic.

Prosopalgia nervosa, pains maddening, spasmodic starts and shocks through body, throws arms upward; skin of forehead wrinkled.

Pain in cheek near left ear, as if sawing the bone; muscle in oscillating motion.

Lower Face

      Moves lips back and forward.

Lips : red, with yellow streak on vermilion border, as in malignant fevers; dry; or sore and cracked.

Lock-jaw after convulsions.

Mouth spasmodically closed.

Lower jaw hangs.

Teeth

      Grinding the teeth.

Sordes on teeth.

Tongue etc.

      Taste : bitter, all food tastes like straw to her.

Stammering; distorts face; makes great effort to speak; mouth drawn now to right again to left.

Speechless; sometimes with spasmodic laughter at night, weeping during day.

Tongue: whitish, with fine red dots; point redder than usual; dry, red; dry and parched; pale red, in constant motion; swollen, coated dry; yellow in centre, dry; swollen, hangs out of the mouth.

Mouth

      Mouth and throat so dry they glisten; thirst.

Saliva increased; dribbling. More saliva with chills and fever.

Viscid slime in mouth.

Whole inner mouth as if raw.

Throat

      Difficult swallowing with stinging, pressing pain in submaxillary glands.

Averse of fluids; shrinks from the proffered cup.

Averse to water, even sight of it causes spasm; constriction of throat, froth, spitting, hydrophobia:.

Feeling as of boiling water rising in throat.

Spasm of oesophagus, worse trying to swallow.

Desires Aversion.

      Appetite either increased or decreased.

Violent thirst.

Troublesome thirst even with much saliva.

Thirstless, sometimes with cold or hot stage and sweat; averse to water during fever.

Averse to water and fluids :,.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Hiccough; restless at night, screaming in sleep.

Nausea : flow of very salt saliva; but cannot vomit.

Vomiting: dark green mixed with food; in evening; vomits bile.

Diaphragmitis, delirium; burning along diaphragm; short- breathed; spasms, struggles against water offered.

Stomach

      Drawing in back part of stomach.

Inflammation, burning; anxiety.

Intense pain, vomits nearly all food.

Cardialgia, eructations, vomiting all food; emaciation.

Epigastrium tense, hard, painful.

Abdomen

      Heat, anxiety in abdomen.

Wind in abdomen awakens her; screams, thinking herself full of creeping things.

Abdomen hard, tense; tympanitic; distended, but not hard.

Colic: with rumbling; violent, coming on suddenly, in evening with faint sensation and cold shivers.

Stool etc.

      Stools: black preceded by writhing in bowels, and delirium; smelling like carrion, blackish; painless, diarrhoeic.

Cholera infantum; foul-smelling stools; strabismus; awakes with fright; pale face.

Constipation: with convulsions; cardialgia; alternating with diarrhoea.

Hemorrhoids painful; bleeding.

Coagulated blood passes from the anus.

Urine

      Kidneys secrete less or none, in acute diseases, especially of children.

Urine clear, profuse, passed suddenly at night; also after delirium; copious with spasms; passed involuntarily; suppressed, especially in cerebral diseases; dribbles slowly, feebly, despite urging no stream forms, no pain.

During urination: rigors, rumbling in belly.

Male Sexual Organs

      Exalted sexual passion.

Child constantly has hand on the genitals with spasms.

Onanism causing epilepsy.

Female Sexual Organs

      Nymphomania; lewd talking; sings obscene songs; has smell of semen.

Excessive menstrual flow; drawing in thighs, abdomen and upper limbs.

Menstrual flow very watery.

During menses loquacity; strong smell as of semen.

After menses; sobbing, whining.

Dysmenorrhoea.

Metrorrhagia, loquacity, singing, praying; sometimes passing large coagula.

Pregnancy

      During pregnancy: mania; faceache; full of strange ideas.

Threatened abortion; unceasing talking, singing, imploring.

Puerperal convulsions, with copious sweating.

Scanty lochia; puerperal mania, milk still copious; many hallucinations; talks foolishly.

Larynx

      Voice: higher and finer; screeching; indistinct. constriction of larynx and thoracic muscles.

Breathing

      Rattling breathing: toward 12 P.M.; in whooping-cough; in chill or sweat.

Frequent inspiration and expiration; breath oppressed.

Breathing: short, difficult; anxious during heat or sweat.

Spasms of muscles of chest; single parts twitch; spasmodic motions of arms; sometimes chest fixed; breathes only with diaphragm and abdominal muscles.

Inspiration slow, expiration quick.

Cough

      Of drunkards.

Periodical, painless, spasmodic cough, shrill screeching tone; worse morning; from touching throat; from walking in wind; in vaulted rooms; after debauch; after fright; from looking at bright objects; from drinking water.

Whooping-cough, barking, croup-like, with suffocating contraction of chest, violent beating of heart, rattling, anxiety, congestion, blood-spitting; convulsions.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
