      Common names: Cowhage, Cow-itch; (Fr). Pois a gratter or Pouillieux; (G). Juck-borsten.

Introduction

Mucuna pruriens, D. C. (Dolichos prugiens, L). Natural order: Leguminosae. Preparation: Trituration (or tincture) of the whole pod.

General symptoms

A painful sensation in the throat below the angle of the lower jaw on the right side; it was as if a splinter of three-quarters of an inch in length was imbedded vertically in that spot; the pain was increased by swallowing. A pain in the gum, so that she could not sleep half the night (observed in a patient after taking Dolichos). Twitching of the muscles (observed in two children after taking Dolichos).

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
