May 13th, 1851, I was requested to attend a cow immediately, that was, as the person who came said, “very bad”. When I first saw her she was standing in the yard, foaming at the mouth, and throwing her head about; her head and ears are very much swollen, glistening wild-looking eyes, she is burning hot all over, she sweats profusely rapid bounding pulse, of which I was unable to take an accurate account, as she was so very restless. I had her put in a house, and gave Aconite 10 drops, 3rd, followed in half an hour by Belladonna 10 drops, 3rd; she stands quietly a minute or two, then starts and rubs her head against the boards, continue the Aconite and Belladonna alternately every hour; after she had taken there doses each there was an improvement; she stands quietly for a quarter of an hour; ears not so much swollen, she does not sweat; continue the medicine at longer intervals; the swelling gradually decreased, and in two days she was quite well. I finished the treatment with a dose of Sulphur, 10 or 15 drops; the skin all peeled off her head and ears.
