Dr. Jayasurya P. Sreeramulu, the Principal of GSPS Government Homoeopathic Medical College, Hyderabad, recently announced that he’d had some modest success treating HIV with the homeopathic remedy Crotalus H. Whether his treatment will bear out is still to be seen. I’m sure that as you’re reading this, your first thought is to learn more about his method. However, that was not the impulse of the National AIDS Control Organisation, which, without ever exploring his findings, declared that it would take legal and administrative action against him for not registering his clinical trial and not informing them of it. 1
Throughout history, new ideas have often been rejected and the people who proposed them persecuted. In the 16th century, Michael Servetus discovered the circulation of the blood, and for this he was charged with heresy and burned at the stake (along with his books to stoke the fire). When William Harvey made the same discovery seventy five years later, he was met with ridicule, although he finally prevailed. Even the simplest ideas may be opposed, as was Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis’s suggestion that surgeons operating with dirty hands caused their patients to fall ill and die. Hahnemann of course had to fight tremendous opposition for years and deal with persecution from orthodox medicine. Homeopaths around the world continue that battle today.
Have you ever wondered which side you would have been on in those historic controversies? Let me suggest that you and the millions of people who have let homeopathy into their lives, would have been on the right side of history. You all have this in common, that you were open to a new idea, even one that has been greatly ridiculed. In the end, you kept your curiosity and trusted your own experiences rather than dogma.
With all the attacks on homeopathy, including the closing of hospitals and schools, the labeling of remedies as “unscientific” and persecution of homeopaths, it would be easy to lose heart. We must remember however, that the fervor with which homeopathy is attacked is in direct proportion to its enormous power to heal. That power is the secret that all of us share. It’s the engine that drives us. We all desire a world where homeopathy is available to everyone, and so much suffering is relieved. No matter what opposition we encounter, we keep moving towards that end. Hahnemann expressed it so well:
“I have paid no regard to either ingratitude or persecutions in the course of my life, which although toilsome, has not been without satisfaction, on account of the grandeur of the end I had in view.” – Samuel Hahnemann

Alan, I didn’t know the guy who discovered circulation was burned at the stake! Holy cow! And, of course, Semmelweis was driven out of medicine and wound up in an insane asylum for saying that doctors should wash their hands! What a profession!
Hi Elaine,
Yes, burned at the stake using his own books for tinder. It’s tough being a pioneer!
Thank you, Alan, for this reminder of “the bigger picture, ” and for all you do to help keep this light of truth burning brightly.
This journal is a treasure.
Thank you Lucy! We’ll keep that light burning brightly.
