Live and Let Live

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kerala State Secretary, Dr Sulphi Noohu, recently made this  request in a letter to PM Modi. He asked the PM to:

“execute restriction on homeopathy and gradually lead to the complete phase out of homeopathy practice in India.”

In so doing he violated a basic tenet of peaceful coexistence: “Live and let live.”  He was attempting to dictate to the entire population of India, what kind of medicine they can use.

The State Secretary lives in India where homeopaths and homeopathy medical schools and hospitals are ubiquitous. The homeopaths have treated millions of cases successfully. In addition, the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy has soundly established the effectiveness of homeopathy in both treatment and prevention of illnesses. Of course, it’s possible that the State Secretary somehow missed all that, throughout his entire career. Some people are just not observant.

In the last several years we’ve heard a choreographed rant from various medical societies disparaging homeopathy, parroting the exact same false statements, as in “It’s not evidence based”. This propaganda is bought and paid for by Pharma, which doesn’t like sharing the marketplace with homeopathy. Its drugs are a leading cause of death in industrialized nations. They don’t cure, and are so expensive that they skyrocket the cost of medical care. In the U.S., where allopathy prevails, medical debt is the number one cause of personal bankruptcy. Allopathic drugs are part of a system that often makes people sicker and drives them into debt. Is this the medical system that the Kerala State Secretary wants to impose on all of India?

Still, there are aspects of allopathy that are clearly needed at times. We all understand that, and homeopaths are not demanding we phase out allopathy. Any rational person would conclude that you should embrace the whole spectrum of medical knowledge and skills. Health Minister KK Shailaja admonished the State Secretary, declaring that, “Each system of medicine has its own merits and the government’s policy is to utilise such merits for the betterment of public health”. And she added that disregarding other systems of medicine is condemnable.

In a democratic society, everyone is free to express their opinion. Still, public figures nowadays should be careful about falsely disparaging homeopathy, lest they be accidentally mistaken for Pharma shills.
