The Courage of Conviction

EDITORIAL April 2018 – Alan V. Schmukler

It’s likely that most doctors come out of medical school with some degree of idealism and good intentions. Immediately, they begin writing prescriptions for drugs with disastrous side effects. They spend the rest of their working years trying to balance harm from disease with harm from drugs. They get stuck on that pharmaceutical treadmill and can’t get off.  But some do…

Our interview this month is with Dr. Ronald D. Whitmont, President of the American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH).  Originally trained in allopathy, he became disenchanted and now practices only classical homeopathy.  Many thousands of AIH members since it was founded in 1844, started out practicing allopathy, saw its failings and embraced homeopathy. It took courage, conviction and passion to make that change. They knew it would be more difficult to earn a living, and there would be opposition from the conventional establishment.

Starting with Hahnemann, and continuing today, homeopaths have had to contend with ignorance, prejudice and even persecution. The famous Scottish homeopath, James Comptom Burnett (1840-1901), was still in medical school when his anatomy teacher warned him that homeopathy wasn’t a promising career. Burnett responded, “I cannot buy worldly honors at the cost of my conscience.”  Following his conscience worked out well, as it often does. He became famous and highly sought after.

Every day more people discover homeopathy and decide to follow that path. In this issue, Maja Letić reports on a Jan Scholten seminar that was attended by 360 homeopaths. They were Slovaks, Czechs, Poles, British, English, Americans, Germans, Hungarians, Serbs and others who traveled to Bratislava, excited to learn new ideas. It’s not unusual for homeopathy students to travel to other countries to study. That enthusiasm is always present and always growing in the homeopathic community.

Lately in the news, I read about homeopathy being disparaged and of attempts to suppress it. This is being done by corrupt individuals who have sold their souls to Pharma. They would sacrifice a life giving healing art for a few dollars. They work in vain. Homeopathy will no more go away than the sun will stop shining.
