It’s Time for a Change

Why does U.S. health care rank last among industrialized nations?

The Commonwealth Fund 1, a New York based foundation that seeks to improve health care, recently compared health care in the U.S. to that of ten other industrialized nations. They concluded that American health care has severe deficits, ranking last among Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the U. K. The study found this to be so, in spite of the fact that the U.S. spends more on health care than any other country. The U.S. had lower scores on safe care, coordinated care, access to care (unable to afford care), administrative costs, mortality, infant mortality and healthy life expectancy at age 60. The report suggested some reasons for these findings, including the lack of national health insurance, failure to reward high quality care, failure to publicly report quality data and not using a team approach in chronic conditions. Something not mentioned in the report, is the fact that the U.S. is one of the countries with the least friendly attitude toward holistic medicine. The government has a poor record of support for holistic care and has more often aggressively suppressed it. The U.S. medical community itself is largely ignorant of holistic methods, especially homeopathy.

The standards of safety, effectiveness (especially in chronic ailments) and cost, that the survey addressed, shout out for homeopathy. The U.S. economy can no longer afford the huge costs of a medical system that serves the people poorly. Insurance companies can’t be happy about paying out millions for drug injury lawsuits.

The homeopathic community needs to get involved in medical education and the lobbying of legislators and insurance companies. It’s time for the U.S. to embrace the best answer it has to improving the quality of its health care. The only interests served by not doing so, are the special interests.

  • Good call, Alan! I agree it’s time for a change. It seems the current healthcare system is imploding upon itself and looking for answers in all the wrong places. I aim to make a difference also in ensuring the public knows there are effective alternatives, including homeopathy among many other holistic treatments often overlooked, as you mentioned in your post. Keep up the great work!

  • Homeopathy and other alternative treatments are overlooked by Governments because they’re not big business, perverse as it may sound there is a huge economy built around and being fed into by sick people, the organisations that profit from disease have always been in bed with decision makers. So on the surface it looks like Government is doing all it can, underneath it’s best to not have a population that is healthy and is able to think for themselves. In Australia we have had Government funded health care for over 40yrs, it has created a mindset indicative of children rather than thinking consumers, if a doctor gives you a prescription you don’t question it. It’s very easy to branded a dissident as we know mainstream media is also in on the act, what you do have in America is some very vocal and growing groups of people who are sharing their experiences with alternative medicine and questioning mainstream medicine, let’s keep supporting them with our experiences and just get the message out to as many people as possible.

  • Well said Michelle. Thank you for your very astute observations. I only wish more people understood those dynamics. People have a difficult time believing that their government could have sinister motives. In the U.S., dissenting views on medicine are often punished severely.

I’ve noticed that a faction in Australia has recently been targeting homeopathy.

The lamp of truth requires a lot of care.
