On Nov 13, 2015, the BBC reported that UK Ministers are considering banning doctors from prescribing homeopathic remedies, a decision to be made sometime in 2016. Two days later the UK newspaper The Guardian, published an editorial1 stating that homeopathy was “placebo”, “mock medicine” and “a charade”, and supporting the blacklisting of homeopathy from the UK health service. Now this may seem odd, considering that homeopathic hospitals, serviced by medical doctors, have existed in the UK for over 100 years. The hospitals have a stellar record of curing the worst epidemics ranging from yellow fever to plague.
Anyone who wishes to investigate homeopathy can easily learn about its 200 year history of documented clinical successes in treating and preventing very serious diseases. In addition, homeopathy now has substantial research2 supporting it. This includes studies involving people, animals, plants, test tube studies and research from theoretical physics. Hundreds of thousands of medical doctors practice homeopathy, often doing 3-4 years of post graduate work. The above facts will easily reveal themselves in a brief search of the internet.
In spite of all this, we still find homeopathy being attacked as placebo, mostly by government officials, academics and the press. There are essentially two categories of critics. The first category consists of individuals who are totally ignorant of homeopathy and just repeating propaganda they’ve been exposed to. The second category is people who know that homeopathy works, but have a vested financial interest in destroying it. When you read about attacks on homeopathy, you have to ask yourself whether you are dealing with pure ignorance, or deceit. Those who deny homeopathy from deceit use the same tactics as those who deny global warming. Just as global warming deniers are financed by the petroleum industry, homeopathy deniers are financed by the pharmaceutical industry. They engage in the same tactics of misinformation using surrogates in academia, in the media and in government.
Now, in what category shall we place the UK Ministers who know full well homeopathy’s splendid history? And what about the Guardian Newspaper, which has near limitless resources for research? The availability of homeopathy is crucial for affordable, safe, effective health care, but there is a larger issue here. Any entity which can corrupt both government and the press, is a danger to democracy itself. When those institutions no longer serve the people, the game is over.
