Reverence

At age thirteen I was given a microscope as a birthday present. I spent years staring through that dark tube and nothing was more fascinating than the teeming life in a drop of pond water. In this tiny world, primitive organisms swam, ate, struggled, defended themselves and multiplied. I became attached to these little creatures, having shared some of their life story, and I always felt uncomfortable “disposing” of the samples. One day, I read about the photographer and biologist Roman Vishniac, who filmed these microscopic organisms for his science documentaries. When he was done filming, he would take the water samples back to the pond, and return the little animals to their “home”. His work was guided by a deep sense of connection to all living things.

The history of science and healing is replete with people who felt this connection and had a sense of awe about the universe. Gregor Mendel, Copernicus, Galileo, Darwin, Einstein, Samuel Hahnemann and Rudolf Steiner for instance, had a deep spiritual sense. Einstein said “I want to know how God created this world, I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts, the rest are details”.

Nowadays scientists have been replaced by technicians, who mix and match genes for profit and treat life as a chemistry experiment. Now especially, it is important to affirm that real science is our attempt to understand the universe and ourselves. It is a search for meaning that must proceed from a reverence and empathy for all of life.
